We went to KAMU kanazawa, a private contemporary art museum that opened in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture in June 2020.
Visitors can experience contemporary art while touring the "Center," "BlackBlack," "Sky," "L," and "tatami" spaces within walking distance. This is a great way to enjoy walking around the city and having fun at a leisurely pace!
We would like to report on KAMU, a spot that is attracting a lot of attention as a new place for Kanazawa art.
* Information is as of the time of coverage in November 2021
*KAMU sky was not open to the public due to a change of exhibition.
Main building "KAMU Center"
First, head to the main building, ``KAMU Center,'' located a 3-minute walk from 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. Tickets common to all spaces are sold only at the main building.
Leandro Erlich's work "INFINITE STAIRCASE", which is a hot topic on SNS, is also exhibited here.
INFINITE STAIRCASE|Leandro Erlich (KAMU Center 1F)
Leandro Erlich's new work "INFINITE STAIRCASE" is on display on the first floor. Leandro is a contemporary artist born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, who created "Swimming Pool" exhibited at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa Kanazawa.
This work is an experiential installation work in which visitors can enter and enjoy the work inside a structure that resembles a spiral staircase turned on its side.
I enjoyed the strange feeling of peering into the atrium of a spiral staircase.
Be sure to take pictures while enjoying the scenery.
Stephanie Quayle (KAMU Center 2F)
On the second floor of the KAMU Center is an animal sculpture by Stephanie Quayle, who is based in the Isle of Man, England. Using clay, various animals are expressed in life size.
It has a rough texture, but it feels so real that it looks like it's about to start moving. It seems that the animals are displayed at the height that each one seems to like!
Takuro Kuwata (KAMU Center 3F)
On display on the 3rd floor are works by ceramic artist Takuro Kuwata, who is based in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture.
Boldly using techniques such as ``Kairagi'' and ``Ishihaze,'' he continues to present expressions that surpass the essence of ceramic art that have never been seen before, along with colorful pigments.
Head to the next exhibition hall with a map of KAMU in hand.
The point of KAMU is that you can enjoy walking around the city while visiting the museums, as the exhibition spaces are scattered within walking distance. It was also an opportunity for us to discover a new charm of Kanazawa, thinking, "There's a wonderful shop in such a place!"
"KAMU Black Black"
Next, head to “KAMU Black Black,” located in one corner of the Tatemachi shopping district.
It is an elongated exhibition space measuring 3m wide x 7m high x 20m deep that utilizes land that evokes Kanazawa's machiya culture.
What is on display is the new work "Líthi" created by audiovisual artist Ryoichi Kurokawa, making use of this space.
Read the notes on the door and go inside.
This is a large-scale installation work with sounds, strobe lights, and laser beams flying overhead.
We were overwhelmed by the fact that light and sound could create such a magnificent view of the world. Among KAMU's works, this is a work that we would especially like you to experience for yourself!
"KAMU tatami"
Next, head to “KAMU tatami,” which opened in October 2021. "KAMU tatami" is a renovated townhouse, and as the name suggests, it is an exhibition space with tatami mats.
The first exhibition will be Go Watanabe's "Journey over a Single Scenery".
It is very refreshing to sit on a tatami mat and appreciate an artwork. The work blended into the atmosphere of the townhouse, and we couldn't help but stare at it.
Although we were unable to visit this time, photographer Daido Moriyama's installation Lip Bar is on display at "KAMU L."
*KAMU sky is not open to the public due to exhibition changes
New spaces open one after another
The 6th space "KAMU k≐k" is scheduled to open on December 17, 2021!
"KAMU kanazawa" is getting more and more exciting with the addition of new spaces. Please enjoy contemporary art while walking around the city!
