A plant specialty store located in Nakamura-ku,  Futamura Green Serviceopens a new business called "YOKONI PLANTS".

Over 100 years since its establishment, the company's new store "YOKONI PLANTS", which has gained tremendous trust from experts such as architects and interior coordinators, is a store where general customers can easily enter.

Enjoy Cool Plants without Being Too Cool!

YOKONI PLANTS is located next to Futamura Green.

The wide, horizontal storefront features a wide variety of plants, from small table-top plants to taller than 2 meters. Lively plants are lined up in a space filled with natural light.

We asked Ryohei Futamura, the manager, what led him to open YOKONI PLANTS.

-First of all, please tell us what made you open.

Mr. Nimura: "Futamura Green used to be a corporate business and retailer, but by utilizing our own purchasing network, the demand for space displays and rental greenery for office and store planting has increased. The number of inquiries from individual customers has increased, and I wanted to create a comfortable green shop that is easier to imagine and easier to see."

-When did you start planning?

Mr. Nimura:"I have been thinking about opening a retail store for more than five years. As we operated Futamura Green, there was a trend of increasing retail sales. Since it was both a store and a workshop, we wanted to separate it from the retail store, and that is where the design and design process began."

-What kind of shop is "YOKONI PLANTS"?

Ms. Nimura: "The shop aims to be a place where we can propose cool plants without being too cool. I am most happy when we think together with our customers about how to decorate and select plants, and make them happy.

In addition, the shop is conscious of the atmosphere that you can easily enter, so that anyone can feel the excitement. The plant species and pots are also selected in a neutral way to match the trends of the times, just like the fashion of clothes."

-Please tell us about the origin and concept of the store name.

Mr. Nimura: "The origin of the name has three meanings: the theme of wanting plants to be placed next to you, and the opening of Yokoi 2-chome’s (their address) "Yokoni" and the fact of opening beside (yokoni) Futamura Green’s. Plants are living creatures, so instead of buying them as ornaments, we want them to be welcomed into our homes as companions like pets. ”

-The store design is also stylish. Please tell us about your preferences.

Mr. Nimura: "We asked Kimura Matsumoto Architects in Kyoto. It has a slightly futuristic image, but the space is created with the awareness that it is a good environment for plants. Brightness, ventilation, etc. , effective design for plant management is applied everywhere.”

The store's facade is made entirely of glass, and the store is filled with bright light. The walls are coated with galvanized steel sheets to softly reflect the light. This wall effect makes effective use of light.

Air circulation is important for growing plants. Equipped with perforated folded plates and ventilation, it circulates the air in the room to the outside and maintains a comfortable temperature. It's not too hot even in the hot summer, and it doesn't wither in the cold of winter.

Introducing Recommended & Popular Plants

Plants grow lively at YOKONI PLANTS. We asked which plants are recommended for beginners.

Mr. Nimura:"For customers who are purchasing plants for the first time, we recommend rubber trees. It is attractive that they are the easiest to manage if they are in a bright and warm room. You can manage it with basic method (if the soil is dry, pour plenty of water)."

There are many types of rubber trees such as Bengalensis, Artesima, and Umberata.

Rubber tree companion "Artesima". It features bright green and yellow variegated leaves.

This is also a kind of rubber tree "Bengalensis". The rounded leaves and curved tree shape have a strong presence.

The price is a guide, but it is around 10,000 yen for a height of 1 to 1.5 meters. It seems that the plant with the height of the stature will also be wrapped so that you can take it home.

This “Schefflera” from Hachijojima has a height of about 3 meters. It's hard to find such a great size.

There are also plenty of hanging plants. The adjacent Futamura Green is the backyard, so the stock is always replenished without running out.

Each tabletop size plant has a different expression.

There are also plenty of outdoor greens. Aussie plants native to Australia are popular because there are few producers. They purchase from producers all over the country through their own purchasing network, so there are rare plants that you don't often see.

Banksia's garden trees are also rich in variety and worth seeing.

It is proposed to install an outdoor interior and coordinate with plants.

Olives are purchased locally at the olive farm "SOUJU" in Kagawa Prefecture. Mr. Futamura said, "Our strength is that we can purchase large bowl sizes that are competitive."

Plenty of Pots and Care Items

After choosing a plant, I would like to enjoy the combination with the pot. The pots sold in the shop are all wonderful.

Among them, there is a wide selection of products from the Belgian pot maker DOMANI. The unique texture and beautiful colors are eye-catching.

The pots of "DOMANI" are rarely sold in Japan, and it is said that only 1 or 2 large pots are sold in Japan.

We also have items such as sprayers and nutrients that were not in the previous Futamura Green.

There are actually various types of foliage plants. I learned what to consider when choosing foliage plants.

① Good tree shape

Plants that are often placed in the corners of rooms or along the walls may be easier to decorate with plants that have a slope or back. Whether you place it on the right side of the room, on the left side, or in the center, you can create a wonderful space by placing plants in the space and choosing branches that do not get in the way.

② Environment

It is a good idea to understand the characteristics of the plant, such as those that like light, those that are resistant to darkness, and those that are resistant to cold.
