"Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens" is located in Chikusa ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture.

It is a familiar spot for people in the Tokai area, but the number of breeding animals is about 450, which is the largest in Japan. 2017 marked the 80th anniversary of the opening of the park.

Speaking of Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, handsome gorillas and koalas are famous, but that is not the only attraction. It is full of highlights, such as the red panda house that just opened in March 2021, and Japan's oldest public greenhouse, which is designated as an important cultural property of the country.

A Thorough Report on How to Enjoy Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens!

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens has a zoo, a botanical garden, and an amusement park, but let's go to the zoo first!

The site area of the zoo is 32.21 hectares. It is divided into two zones: the "Main Park" where popular animals are kept, and the "North Park" where killifish and apes are raised in the hills.

This time, I would like to visit mainly the Main Park and the North Park.

"Sky View Train Main Gate Station" is located right after entering the main gate.

A monorail that connects the entrance to the botanical garden "Sky View Train Botanical Garden Station". You can move a distance of about 800m in about 10 minutes.

It is recommended for those who want to visit the botanical garden and the Japanese animal area!

A Large Collection of Popular Animals! "Main Park"

The Asian Elephant House "Zoogeum" Inspired by Sri Lanka, the Home of Asian Elephants.

First, to the Asian Elephant House "Zoogeum" completed in 2013!

With an area of approximately 3,350 square meters, it was designed in the image of Sri Lanka, the home of Asian elephants.

Asian elephants are active throughout the day in all four seasons. Elephants like to get wet, so you can see them lively, especially on rainy days.

The Zoogeum is home to four Asian elephants: Walder, Anura, Kosala, and Sakura. The caring Walder is the leader of Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, who came to the park in 1973!

Inside the building, there are also exhibits where you can learn about the history and ecology of elephants. Elephant feet are so big! The thickness of the skin is said to be 2 to 4 cm.

It is an elephant museum where you can see elephants while learning!

Unfortunately, we weren't able to see them that day, but you can see the elephants up close from this "slit view".

The red kangaroo is the largest of the kangaroos. There is a considerable difference in body size between males and females. This is a male red kangaroo with a large body and great muscles!

Let's Go Meet the King of Beasts! "Wa-O-Tube"

Next, we went to the lion house "Wa-O-Tube", which was built in 2007 to commemorate the park's 70th anniversary. This is a facility where you can observe lions up close.

I cross the bridge with the pounding heart.

Sora

Three lions, Sun, Luna, and Sora, are kept in the lion house. We could meet Sora today, who is the son of Sun and Luna. He is characterized by long face and smooth hair. He seems to have a gentle personality.

Seeing a lion up close is quite impressive.

We recommend feeding them in the early afternoon, so let's go inside the building!

Oh no, they are taking a nap. I waited to see if they would wake up, but it never happened...

When I went again in the evening, the ordinance was happening! ! Rei is light-colored and naughty. How adorable!

The length of the Shisen red panda is about 60 cm. It lives in cold regions of China and Myanmar at altitudes of 1,500 meters or more, and is designated as an endangered species.

By the way, the indoor exhibition room and the outdoor playground are connected, and if you're lucky, you can even see them walking through the aisles!

Next, let's go to the giraffe house.

Reticulated Giraffe, the Tallest Animal on Land

reticulated giraffe

At Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, four reticulated giraffes are bred. Giraffes are known for their relaxed appearance, but they can actually run at a speed of 50km/h!

There are benches in front of the reticulated giraffe lawn, so you can take your time and observe them. It's time to take a break.

Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens' Fluffy Idol "Koala House"

Koala house

I came to the "Koala House". Speaking of Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens and Botanical Gardens, Koala! Isn't there a lot of people who say?

Koala house

First, let's learn about koalas at the learning facility "Koala Forest" in front of the koala house.

Koalas sleep 20 hours a day. Is it possible to see a koala that is awake? !

Koala house

The room is very spacious! Can you spot the koalas?

Koala house

I was there! I am taking a nap on the tree. The fluffy appearance is like a stuffed animal.

Koala house

It was just meal time, so I was able to see the koalas awake.

Koala house

This is a meal. It takes about an hour to enjoy a leisurely lunch.

Koala house

There was even a baby koala! Just like an angel! Currently, three baby koalas born in 2020 are being bred in the Koala House.

The symbol mark on the wall of the koala house was created by cartoonist Akira Toriyama when the koalas first visited the zoo in 1984. please check it!

Popular Spot "Bird Hall", Known to Those in the Know

bird hall

The "Bird Hall" is just a short walk from the koala house. In fact, it is a popular spot known only to those in the know.

bird hall

Inside, you can see about 10 kinds of colorful birds such as Indian peacocks and guinea fowl. And what is surprising is the display method.

bird hall

Surprisingly, there is no barrier such as a fence or glass between the birds and people. You can see the birds moving around freely at a distance that you can almost reach if you stretch out your hand. Even the staff say it's a mystery why the birds don't come to the aisle.
