"Local industry" challenge to return to its origin
The current president Hida Sangyo, who took office in 2000, is also actively working on environmental issues. They reconsidered the conventional wisdom of making furniture by avoiding joints, and introduced "Words of the Forest", a piece of furniture that takes advantage of wood joints. This also led to a reduction in waste materials.
Also, some of the Good Design Award marks I saw in the showroom. One of them, "KISARAGI", uses compressed conifers and cedars, which are considered unsuitable for furniture.
Mr. Morino: “When you look out over the four mountains of Takayama, you will notice that there are many black areas. These are cedar trees that proliferated after the war as a result of the policy of planting fast-growing coniferous trees. Neglected cedars are treated as bad guys because of their pollen and typhoon damage, etc. I felt that it was our duty as humans, especially those of us who have made a living from trees, to make good use of these cedars.”
Every day he repeats trial and error with experts to take on challenges that everyone gave up on as "impossible." In 2014, we finally developed a unique technology to compress and fix the cedar.
Mr. Morino: “When our company was founded, we did what our predecessors tried to make the most of the beech trees. The starting point of the local industry is to make effective use of the local resources.”
Mr. Morino: "Purchasing timber from foreign countries is profitable for that country. In addition, there is also the problem of CO2 emissions because heavy oil and petroleum are used to cross the sea. But with cedar, we can properly give back to the local community."
With the motto of "using all of the wood", we use cedar compression technology to extract ingredients from trees. They are sold as aroma goods at the adjoining shop.
The roots of Hida Sangyo are our attitude of changing our way of thinking and challenging ourselves to do things that no one else has done or that are said to be "impossible."
This outlet store is one such challenge. After the collapse of the bubble economy, the idea of the president who saw the products piled up in inventory was realized.
Exhibits are lined up all over the place, and all of them are sold at reasonable prices.
There are many bargains such as fabrics, woodwork miscellaneous goods, and single-plate tables. Of course, local shipping is also supported, so you can enjoy unexpected encounters with furniture.
Please experience the goodness of Hida furniture backed by 100 years of history and the passion of the creators.
