"Space Cafe Gallery Ai" is located in a residential area of Tokai City, Aichi Prefecture. The 180-year-old building is surrounded by a garden where you can enjoy the changing seasons.

Also popular are the health-themed lunches and parfaits that use plenty of seasonal fruits. There is also a gallery displaying handmade tableware in the store, so you can enjoy the collaboration between the tableware and the food.

It's a perfect space for friends, couples, and even alone to relax.

The concept is "extraordinary space that satisfies the five senses"

Space Cafe Gallery Ai (hereinafter referred to as Ai) is an old folk house cafe that stands quietly in a residential area of Tokai City.

After a short walk from the parking lot, you will see the entrance sign.

As soon as you step inside, you will instantly find yourself in a healing space. If you go along the cobblestone road, you will see the entrance in front of you.

If you look to the left, trees such as autumn leaves and cedars are full of rustic atmosphere, and it is truly an oasis of nature. It was the rainy season when I visited, so the fresh green trees wet with rain were especially fantastic.

Go straight down this road and you'll find an exit.

When you open the front door, you will be greeted by a tatami room with a raised floor and a simply decorated interior.

When you look up at the ceiling, you can see the splendid beams of the time, which are left as they are. The amber texture that has changed color over the years is also wonderful. The 180-year-old building was originally a headman's house and later a nunnery, but over time it had been operating as a kaiseki restaurant for about 10 years. In 2017, it was renewed as the current cafe.

A healing space where slow time flows

The concept of the shop is "an extraordinary space that satisfies the five senses".

As the store manager says, ``I want you to forget about your daily life and enjoy the feeling of being satisfied with the five senses that Japanese people originally  have,'' it is truly a space of slow time and healing, where you can be released from the busyness and distractions of daily time.

The cafe is divided into several rooms, each with a view of the garden. It can be used for a table, a counter, or a tatami room, depending on the purpose of use.

Check out the interior, including unique chairs and wallpaper

In addition, the wallpaper and chairs designed by William Morris, who is known as the father of modern design, add a nice accent to the space. It is a wonderful combination of Japanese and Western styles.

The manager's father is in the interior design business, so he can reupholster chairs upon request. If you are interested in this service, please ask the store staff for a catalog.

If you have such a nice chair, your dog will be happy!

The fabric of the chairs in the store is also wonderful with different patterns.

Mini chairs made with colorful fabrics are popular with children and as gifts. Since it is an original one-of-a-kind item, why not use it as a souvenir? *Custom order starts from 12,000 yen

Worked for about 9 years at a publishing company that develops wedding information magazines, beauty products, and food and beverage products. After getting married and retiring, my love for travel increased and I became a freelance writer. Due to a family transfer, I went to Fukuoka and Hiroshima, and currently live in Nagoya. Enjoying and discovering the charms of not only Aichi Prefecture but also the three Tokai prefectures. My specialties are shrines and hot springs, and I also love delicious food. We will deliver "new discoveries" to the "normal" of local people.
