Founded in 1912. Historical "Bon Senga"
Bon Senga was founded in 1912 (the first year of the Taisho era) as a confectionery wholesaler in this same location as it is today. After the war, the production of sweets and bread became the main business, and it continues to this day.
They have prepared a variety of sweet buns, such as the "budo (raisin) bread" that the previous owner ate in post-war America and was impressed, and the homemade red bean paste bun.
They used to sell their own sweets and bread, but in the 1980s, a coffee shop boom arrived. "Bon Senga" also renovated a corner of the store and opened a cafe.
The lighting, chairs, counters and tables are all the same. The atmosphere will make you feel as if you have returned to the Showa era.
Recently, there has been a boom in retro cafes, and it seems that the number of posts such as photos of cafes and breads of "Bon Senga" is increasing mainly on SNS. The shop has many fans among the younger generation.
It is still in business today, serving pastries, bread, and coffee! It continues to be loved by men and women of all ages, including families who have been fans for three generations, old regulars, and young people.
Sweet bread in a cute old-fashioned package
Bon Senga" offers an array of traditional sweet breads. The packaging has not changed since those days. The packaging has become a hot topic on SNS, with customers saying, "Cute!”
There are even fans who travel from far and wide for this package, and it has been featured in many TV programs, magazines, and other media.
All sweet buns have a simple taste and sweetness, and the bread dough has been made unchanged since that time. Even if you eat it for the first time, you will feel nostalgic for some reason.
"Papillo (131 yen + tax)" is a bread with nostalgic butter cream. The red and yellow package design is also cute!
"Budo bread (150 yen + tax)" has been popular since its establishment. A popular sweet bun filled with plenty of raisins. Many people buy it as a souvenir.
"Jam bread (120 yen + tax)" contains plenty of slightly sweet jam. It is also made using a method that has not changed since ancient times.
"Cream bread (120 yen + tax)" is a bread stuffed with cream.
"Ogura Anpan (131 yen + tax)". This is the grained bean paste type, but strained bean paste type is also available.
"Three-color bread (200 yen + tax)" is a luxurious sweet bread containing white bean paste, jam, and cream.
Lemon bread (160 yen + tax), which is not a melon bread, is a lemon bread with a faint scent of lemon.
Actually, they also sell white bread (295 yen + tax per loaf). It's also good to cut it into thick slices and enjoy it with Ogura (red bean paste) and butter!
In addition, they also sell a variety of side dish breads, so much so that you may be at a loss as to which one to choose!
A warm cafe corner where you can feel relieved
A cafe corner at the back of the entrance. The atmosphere of the Showa era spreads out in a space that is attractive. Here you can also eat in drinks and sweet buns sold.
The pop and cute lighting and floor make you want to take pictures!
The old-fashioned chairs are also tasteful and nice.
Here is the cafe menu. They have a variety of menus such as coffee, juice, and ice cream.
The first thing I ordered was coffee, and as one would expect from a coffee shop, the coffee was served with a side of bean snacks! The staff can tell which menu item is ordered just by looking at the faces of the regulars who live in the neighborhood, and the amount of milk is also prepared as soon as they see the customers.
It is also good to drink with "Papillo" buttered bread purchased in the store.
And the next thing I ordered was my personal favorite cream soda. Recently, it seems that customers sometimes visit for this cream soda. It's an old-fashioned cream soda that makes you feel nostalgic.
Hope to continue to be loved for many years to come.
"Bon Senga" has a history of over 100 years since it started as a confectionery wholesaler. Because it has been around for a long time, they continue to stick to "the taste that has not changed since the old days."
Many of the people who come here from far away say, "I'm back in Toyohashi."
Because it is a traditional small bakery, they take care of old things such as lighting while repairing them, and continue to produce "unchanging goodness".
"Bon Senga" has now become a popular shop with an increasing number of young customers. "We want to create a shop that will continue to be loved by generations to come," they said.
"Bon Senga" can be said to be an icon of Toyohashi. This is a long-established bakery that almost every Toyohashi citizen knows about.
The area in front of Toyohashi Station has been developed over the past few years, and various buildings have been added, but "Bon Senga" remains in the same location, and just passing by is enough to make anyone feel at ease and say, "Ah, I'm back in Toyohashi."
