[Free Admission]  Feather Museum, the world's first comprehensive blade museum

The "Feather Museum" is located in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture, which is known as the city  of blade-producing. The world's first general blade museum operated by Feather Safety Razor, which has a history of more than 80 years.

With the theme of "cutting", this is a hands-on facility where everyone from children to adults can learn while having fun.

There are more than 10,000 items in the museum, and there are plenty of highlights such as a giant razor, a theater, and a museum shop! Admission is free, so it is recommended as a family outing spot.

Feather Museum

WE came to the Feather Museum! About 1 hour by car from Nagoya. It's the perfect distance for a weekend outing.

A giant razor welcomes you!
Entrance Hall

The entrance is a corner where you can enjoy taking commemorative photos.

This is a giant razor that is about 35 times the size of the real thing!

This is also a big size scalpel. You can take pictures as if you were a dwarf. Please take a picture to commemorate your visit.

Let

A corner that is especially popular with children is "Let's cut the picture reflected on the wall!" The painting on the wall cuts off according to the movement of the body. It's a game that even adults will be addicted to.

First, go to the theater. Dr. Hige and Feather will teach you the "secret of cutting" in an easy-to-understand manner.

There are various ways to "cut".

Cutting by pinching such as scissors and punches. Cutting by pushing such as kitchen knives and cutters. Cutting by shaving, such as with a planer or a razor. We realized again that blades are indispensable in our daily lives.

The history of Feather, "Feather History"

Next, go to "Feather History".

Feather was established in July 1932 as "Seki Safety Razor Manufacturing Joint Stock Company". In this corner, about 80 years of Feather's history and products are introduced.

Here is the actual razor of the giant razor that we introduced earlier. Double-edged razors were the norm at the time.

We found a unique panel!

Feather's male employees shave at work. This is a custom unique to a blade company.

In the 1960s, the company entered the medical industry. Different types of scalpels are needed because different types of scalpels are used depending on the part of the body and the surgical method.

replaceable blade microtome

Among them, we  would like you to pay particular attention to the "replaceable blade microtome".

A microtome is an instrument that uniformly cuts samples for microscopic observation. Feather's "Replaceable Blade Microtome", which was released in 1978, has since become the mainstream in the world of pathology and autopsy.

Thanks to these blades, our health is protected.

Advertisements that became a hot topic reflecting the times "public relations exhibition"

PR exhibition

Next, go to the "PR Exhibition" corner.

For example, this razor robot was used to film a commercial with a person inside!

There is also an exhibition of NMB48's costumes, which served as Feather's commercials for seven years. It seems that there are many fans who rush to see this costume!

In one corner of the hall, the work of Mr. Seiji Fujishiro, the leading shadowgrapher, was exhibited.

To my surprise, Mr. Fujishiro uses a single-edged feather blade to create his works. The works created by hand-cutting color filters are very fantastic.

Next, let's go to the second floor!

Learn more about cutlery (2nd floor)

On the 2nd floor, not only feathers, but also the history of blade and the mechanism of cutting are introduced.

In the first corner, a three-sided multi-image display introduces the many "cutting" things that exist in the world. Children will surely be excited!

There is also a corner where visitors can learn about the cutting mechanism of knives while experiencing it safely.

The quiz corner at the end of the course allows you to review what you have learned, and up to four people can take the quiz at the same time, so see who can answer the questions the best!

When we think of blades, we only think of kitchen knives, razors, and scissors, but we learned that knives are such an essential part of our lives. Exactly, they are inseparable.

It was so impressive that I wondered, "Is it really free to enter?!" The Feather Museum is a place where both adults and children can enjoy learning about knives. Please come and visit us.
