In July 2022, the cafe “Motion.” opened in Osu, Naka-ku, Nagoya.

The stylish, all-glass exterior of this shop stands out in the Osu Shopping Arcade, where Osu Kannon and Fuji Sengen Shrine stand side by side. The store's logo with reversed letters also attracts our attention. We visited the shop and talked to the owner, Ryosuke Hara.

Café “Motion.” Opens in Osu Shopping Arcade

"Motion." is located about a 4-minute walk from Osu Kannon Subway Station, a short distance from the bustling Osu Shopping Arcade, and has been popular among young women since it opened in July 2022.

Mr. Hara, who runs the coffee roastery "RIVERBED COFFEE" in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, has opened his second café with a new concept.

First, we asked about the background to the opening of Motion.

Mr. Hara:"I have been roasting coffee as a hobby since I was a student, roasting a variety of beans, but I started a company because the variety of beans I could purchase was limited within the scope of my hobby. I opened RIVERBED COFFEE, a roasting place and café in Nakatsugawa City, to let more people enjoy good coffee. for my second store, I decided to focus on café lattes."

Mr. Hara:"We handle specialty coffee, which is a high quality coffee bean that only a few percent of the entire coffee industry distributes. However, this industry tends to have a rigid image and stereotypes. We opened Motion. because we want people to enjoy specialty coffee from a different perspective.”

Originally working as a barista at a cafe in Tokyo, Mr. Oguri was invited by his friend, Mr. Hara, to join with the opening.

"I want it to move in a good direction"

The store name "Motion." holds the meaning of "movement".

Mr. Hara: "I named it with the idea that I want to make it a place to start something new. I want young people who want to start something but don't have a place to use it, and I want the people involved to move in a better direction."

In October, an apparel pop-up store will be held. He told me that he would like to make it a place to hold events in various industries in the future.

Fashionable store

A simple store with white color. Not only is it stylish, but it also has a playful ingenuity.

It seems that it was devised from the desire to enjoy specialty coffee with a formal concept, as it is only noticed after entering the store.

It doesn't just look good! Discerning menu

Photogenic drinks and food are a hot topic, but Motion. offers a menu that focuses on health and taste.

Motion. Latte ￥650

The signboard menu "Motion. Latte" is a latte that uses bright red root vegetable beets. Beets, which are said to be "drinkable blood" and are highly nutritious, are finished with a taste that brings out the original sweetness of the ingredients. The pink color, which is also the brand color, is eye-catching, but it is a drink that is conscious of health and taste in addition to its appearance.

The popular "Caffe Latte" is sure to heal you with its mellow flavor. It is also recommended for those who do not like coffee.

Drip coffee ￥600～

Mr. Oguri carefully hand-dripped the coffee from Nicaragua. It features a gentle sweetness reminiscent of cinnamon, hazelnut flavor, and vanilla ice cream.

When you finish drinking, the Motion. logo will appear on the bottom of the cup. You can find the charm of the cafe here and there.

At "RIVERBED COFFEE", about 15 types of beans are roasted in-house to bring out the sweetness and aroma. Motion. has a lineup of about 5 types of beans selected from among them, ranging from light to medium roast.

Canelé ￥400

What you want to enjoy with your drink is the sweets of your choice. Under the supervision of Yuma Ishizaki, the chef of the French restaurant Yumanite in Yoyogi Uehara, Tokyo, it is handmade in the store.

In addition to canelés, financiers and lemon cakes are also available.

They also sell cookies from ovgo Baker. It seems that you can enjoy pairing with coffee.

Photogenic drinks and delicious sweets. That in itself is a blessing, but as Motion. wants you to "take in nutrition while having fun," your heart will be filled with Motion's attention to detail.
