You can create your own notebook! Original notebook & specialty coffee "NO DETAIL IS SMALL"

``NO DETAIL IS SMALL'' is tucked away in a back alley in Endoji shopping district. This is an original notebook and specialty coffee shop run by a couple who are an architect and a designer. The store is lined with carefully selected notebooks.

And with NO DETAIL IS SMALL, you can even create your own original notes. This time, I actually experienced a notebook-making workshop!

Be more particular about your notes

NO DETAIL IS SMALL was born in August 2016. What led you to open it? We spoke to the owner, Mr. Yada.

Mr. Yada: ``We also run a design office called Yoshinori Yada Architectural Design Office, and we got involved with the design of a long-established stationery store in Okazaki. We were entrusted with not only the design of the store, but also the concept and branding.

While researching various stationery stores, I found that many people were particular about writing utensils such as fountain pens and pens, but I was wondering why so few people were particular about notebooks. Since we were originally involved in product design, we decided to design our own notebooks, and that's how the store was born. ”

Creating notes with attention to detail

Inside of shop

Mr. Yada: ``The store name ``NO DETAIL IS SMALL'' means ``pay attention to detail.'' It also means being attentive and attentive. That's why I pay particular attention to paper and materials. The materials are made in Japan and mainly sourced from local industries. For example, the cloth used for the cover is Chita Momen, which is woven on the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture. We also ask a factory in Aichi Prefecture to process the notes into notebooks. ”

NO DETAIL IS SMALL allows you to test write on all types of paper. Please try out our carefully selected materials.

You can create your own notebook!
Note making workshop

Note making workshop

This time, I actually tried a notebook-making workshop! The person who took on the challenge was Asai, a staff member who was trying out notebook-making for the first time.

Create a ring notebook by choosing the cover, inside paper, and back cover of the notebook. Create your own notebook using a bookbinding machine, from paper selection to hole punching to ring binding.

Step 1: Select the cover

Cover selection

leather coverThe leather is from Himeji. Even the same type of leather has slightly different colors.

First, choose the cover that will be the face of your notebook. There are 3 types: black, white, and leather. Some are made of cloth, wood, or wallpaper. This time I chose leather. The more you use leather, the more its flavor increases, and it is said to be popular among both men and women.

Step 2: Choose a ring

ring

Next, choose a ring. 7 types in total (gray is added to the one in the photo). It is also possible to combine rings of different colors.

Place the ring on the cover and choose a combination. Just because the ring is different, the impression is quite different.

Step 3: Select the inner paper

Finally, choose the inner paper of your notebook. There are 7 types of paper in total. While learning about the characteristics of each paper, we will try writing on it one by one. The writing experience varies considerably depending on the writing utensil, so we recommend that you bring the writing utensil you usually use.

OK fools paper
"OK fools paper" with watermark

・OK fools paper
It is said that the origin of "fools paper" is a British paper called "foolscap", which got its name from the fact that it had a "clown hat" watermark on it. Fountain pens write smoothly and absorb ink so well that no absorbent paper is needed, and it does not bleed through. This paper has a pleasant texture, texture, and writing feel.

・Bank Paper
The name "bank paper" comes from the fact that Mitsubishi Paper Mills manufactured and used it as bookkeeping paper (special paper) for banks. Bank ledger paper was used to record very important information. Therefore, it is easy to write on, and has excellent storage and durability.

・Takegami 100
Paper made from 100% domestic bamboo. Since ancient times, ``bamboo'' has been a very familiar item, such as bamboo brooms and bamboo baskets. However, with the development of civilization, its use decreased dramatically... Traditional bamboo forests have been neglected, causing various problems. ``Takegami 100'' is a paper that was developed and created as a way to solve the problem of abandoned bamboo forests. The paper is strong and flexible, so it is recommended to relax and write smoothly!

・Tomoe River
As the name suggests, this paper is made at the Tomoe River Paper Mill located on the banks of the Tomoe River in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Its characteristics are that it is ultra-light and thin. However, there is no ink bleed through. Since it is originally dictionary paper, it is thin, resistant to turning, and durable enough to resist tearing.

・Monte Lukia
The paper color is 92% white, making it as white as a snowy mountain illuminated by the sun. As a result, the color of the written text and ink is very good on this paper. Another feature is that it is more than twice as thick as paper of the same weight, so it has a soft writing feel and is gentle to the touch.

・Kishu color high quality gray/black
Since its release in 1954, paper has been widely used in notebooks, books, paper, etc. Since there is no coating on the surface, it has a good texture and is highly opaque. The texture of the paper surface and the good coloring are unique to Kishu Color High Quality.

This time I chose this combination. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of notebook it will be.

In the NO DETAIL IS SMALL workshop, we will create another notebook.

The reason for this is our "Share happiness!workshop" initiative. NO DETAIL IS SMALL is an initiative in which the notebooks created by participants in the workshop are donated to junior high and high school students at a children's home in Nagoya City.

We create things with someone in mind. Use something that has your heart set on it. It's a great initiative for both.

Step 4: Make holes with the binding machine

製本機
Bookbinding machine

First, learn how to use a bookbinding machine. Set the blade according to the position of the hole where the ring will pass.

It's finally time to try out a bookbinding machine for the first time. Hold the lever and apply pressure.

Check that the position is correct using the guide.

Make holes in the cover, inner paper, and backing paper in the same way.

Step 5: Attach the ring using the binding machine

Cut the ring to the required length.

Pass the ring through the notebook and press it with a binding machine to bind the ring.

Step 6: Add the underlayment and you're done!

Finally, add the underlay and you're done!

NO DETAIL IS SMALL will package your item in an original box, so it is also recommended as a gift for your loved ones. Many people give it as a gift to celebrate getting a job or going to college.

Try a note-making workshop

Two notebooks were completed in about an hour and a half. I would like to hear your thoughts right away!

Asai: ``I chose a leather cover so that it could be used for as long as possible. There were a lot of rings, so I was worried, but I was especially careful when choosing the paper inside. He carefully explained to me what kind of material it is and what kind of material it is made of, and when I actually tried writing on it, I was surprised at the difference.Everything was unique and interesting.

It was easier to make than I expected, but it ended up taking a lot of time to make it the way I wanted it. But even that time of worrying was really interesting, and that's why I was so moved when it was completed.

The notebook I created as part of the ``Share happiness!workshop'' felt more like a gift than a donation. The experience of giving something I made as a gift to someone whose name or face I don't know was very refreshing, and I was thinking about what kind of person it would reach and how I wanted it to be used with care.

I think this is a workshop that both adults and children can enjoy. Because we live in an age where digitalization is progressing, I wanted small children to actually experience the benefits of paper. ”

After making notes, have a relaxing coffee time

After the workshop, it's time for coffee with NO DETAIL IS SMALL's specialty coffee. (You can also receive it during the workshop)

specialty coffeeSpecialty coffee ¥540~

Two to three types of single-origin dishes selected by the owner will be introduced every week. Of course, you can also use it just for coffee. Some people come here looking forward to the changing beans.

coffee tonic

And, perfect for the coming season is the ``Coffee Tonic'' (beans change daily). The glass contains ice and syrup, and you can pour cold brew coffee and tonic water into it. The carbonation makes it refreshing and easy to drink, and I think even people who don't like bitter tastes can enjoy it like a juice.

The taste of coffee while immersing yourself in the happy aftertaste of making notes is exceptional.

There is an impression that notebooks are disposable, but with NO DETAIL IS SMALL, the inner paper can be replaced, so you can use them carefully for a long time. Notebooks are something that is as familiar and used every day as clothes and accessories. Why not pay close attention to your notebook as well as your writing utensils?
