A space full of the world of "Sherlock Holmes" and an original menu full of commitment

A 3-minute walk from Nishitakakura Station on the Meijo Line, "Beer & Restaurant Sherlock Holmes" with an impressive clock tower along Fushimi Street. A Sherlock Holmes themed restaurant and coffee shop.

In addition to the exterior appearance, once you step inside the store, you will find yourself in a space full of the world of Sherlock Holmes. This time, we will also introduce the secret of the original menu that has been loved for over 40 years.

Opened in 1980
"I want to make a store with a story"

Beer & Restaurant Sherlock Holmes

The founding of "Sherlock Holmes" dates back to 1980. They used to have a coffee shop in Higashi-Shinmachi that mainly served coffee, but they moved from there to the current location as "Beer Restaurant", and it's been 25 years.

At the beginning of the opening, there was a coffee shop boom that there was a vocational school called "Kissa Culinary School" in Nagoya. In the midst of this, when he thought that he wanted to make a shop that was different from other shops, he thought, "If I'm going to do it, I want to make it a shop with a story."

This is how the idea of creating a restaurant based on the story of Sherlock Holmes set in London, England, was born.

He had been familiar with Holmes and his good friend Dr. Watson by reading about them in books since his junior high school days, and it seems that the idea of the theme started with the rooms and streets where Holmes and Dr. Watson lived together and the books written by Dr. Watson's hand.

The owner's thoughts are also spelled out on this coaster in the store, so be sure to check it out!

A clock tower inspired by Big Ben in England

The clock tower on the roof of the building was created in the image of Big Ben in England, and it is not just a decoration, but an actual clock tower.

Parking space (6 cars) on the first floor. Commitment to the same design as the mural on the London subway.

The stairs leading from the entrance to the 2nd floor and the entrance will make you feel like you are in London, England.

1st floor with open ceiling

When you open the door, you will find a vaulted ceiling, an open space, and a massive candy-colored wood taste. You will feel as if you were transported back in time to England, where Sherlock Holmes played an active role.

In addition to table seats, there are also counter seats facing Fushimi-dori.

There is also a counter reminiscent of a London pub. Scotch whisky, bourbon, Canadian, Irish, and other drinks can be enjoyed.

Antique typing machine and telephone. The wooden sign hanging on the wall was made by a customer when he moved to his current store.

Instead of weekly magazines, which are common in coffee shops, there arre only travel magazines and newspapers.

The wallpaper in the restroom has a classical floral pattern, giving it an exotic atmosphere.

3rd floor full of playfulness of the owner

When you climb the stairs, you will find a wallpaper designed with a bookshelf that stands out. It is a discerning design that was not available in Japan. The ladder leaning against the ceiling is also playful.

The chair at the end of the hallway is a chair that have been in the building since it first opened, and are supposed to be the chair that Holmes sat in.

This is a special room called "Royal Room". It is often used for entertaining guests.

Real quill and bell. They can be actually used, they are lightweight, and now they seem conversely new.

A must-see checkpoint for Sherlock Holmes fans

In addition, there are plenty of goods and attractions related to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson throughout the store! The photo is a DVD with the entire series. Many people are excited to see the nostalgic title.

The word "VR" is tacked into the wall on the first floor. This is a reproduction of the setting that Holmes was sitting in a chair and shooting with a pistol towards the wall.

There are various types of pipes. It seems that Sherlock Holmes used them differently when he was in trouble, when he wanted inspiration, and so on.

One of Sherlock Holmes' trademarks is the checkered deerstalker hat. This is what the owner made for himself to wear.

If you look up a little, you will see letters written in English on the wall in several places. The contents are different for each, but it seems that the lines actually used in the book are excerpted. By the way, "Are you Moriarty" in the picture is said to be the line Holmes said when he met his nemesis Moriarty for the last time.

These are real encyclopedias. They have a whole volume, but only a part of it is on display.

This is a book about Sherlock Holmes. Even if you don't know him at all, it might be interesting to get interested in or learn about him from these books.

By the way, one of the books I mentioned earlier is "The cookbook of the Sherlock Holmes family".

In fact, there are various recipes listed here, and it seems that some of them are also used as references for the menu of the shop.

And this picture depicts Baker Street, where Holmes and Watson lived, and was handwritten by Mr. Kiyoshi Tanaka, who is said to be the leading authority on Sherlock Holmes. Hearing rumors, he came to the store, and since then he has been in touch with them.

Morning breakfast and pizza
using the original Holmes bread

The store can be used for a variety of purposes, from morning breakfast to lunch, and even alcohol serving   at night.

There are two types of morning breakfast sets: coffee (600 yen) and tea (650 yen). (Weekday prices/Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays add 50 yen each for the above with bacon). The bread used is the shop's original Holmes bread. Many places usually use white bread, but here they use the bun type used for hamburgers.

Holmes bread is slightly larger than normal buns and has notches. The inside is coated with butter, and its texture is surprisingly fluffy! If you want to eat a little more, you can get a second serving of coffee (150 yen) or bread (220 yen).

And one of the shop's recommended menus is "Croissant pizza toast (photo)". A large custom-ordered croissant cut diagonally and finished with beaten egg and cheese is a popular menu that changes the concept of toast with a crispy croissant and bacon with a salty taste and exquisite entanglement with cheese. It's one of their popular menues.

By the way, bread can also be taken out. You can choose the number and contents, so you can enjoy it at home.

Exquisite sweets for daily lunch!

There are five types of lunch menus on weekdays, two of which are the service lunch (S) and the daily lunch (A). Both are good value with coffee.

Today's S lunch is shrimp doria. A la carte is 1,360 yen, but on this day, the lunch was shrimp doria, corn soup, and a drink for 1,030 yen, which is quite a bargain!

And this carrot cake has been a popular long-selling sweet since its founding!

It says "carrot", but you can't really smell the carrot, it just has a light rum scent. The sponge is accented with dried fruits and the crunch of  walnuts, topped with butter cream and vanilla ice cream.

Ginger powder is placed on top of the fresh cream, and you can enjoy various flavors in one bite. It's satisfying enough to eat and can be taken out (base cake only).

For drinks, we recommend the English milk tea. If you extract the flavorful orange pekoe tea leaves with milk and have it in a rose-patterned Royal Albert cup, it will make you feel gorgeous and elegant. (* Single item 690 yen. Cake set 1,200 yen.)

From the exterior and interior to the menu, the restaurant stands out for its originality that can only be experienced here, and is also steeped in the owner's love of Sherlock Holmes. Customers will feel as if they were Holms's clients.

The owner says, "I hope people who know Holmes and those who don't know can enjoy it in their own way." Why don't you relax in a playful space that is a bit different from the usual cafe?

Worked for about 9 years at a publishing company that develops wedding information magazines, beauty products, and food and beverage products. After getting married and retiring, my love for travel increased and I became a freelance writer. Due to a family transfer, I went to Fukuoka and Hiroshima, and currently live in Nagoya. Enjoying and discovering the charms of not only Aichi Prefecture but also the three Tokai prefectures. My specialties are shrines and hot springs, and I also love delicious food. We will deliver "new discoveries" to the "normal" of local people.
