Western Confectionery Cafe Bonbon: A Long-established Showa Retro Coffee Shop
Table of Contents
Tokai area has a long history of tea drinking culture, and even here in Nagoya there are many coffee shops and cafes scattered throughout the city. Among them, "Western confectionery cafe Bonbon" is known as a coffee shop that represents Nagoya.
From regulars who come every morning to drink coffee, to tourists, and recently, many young people have been visiting, and since I was a child, I used to go there frequently with my grandparents and mother. I love the cakes and space here so much that I still go there once or twice a month.
Bonbon was founded in 1949. At a time when butter cream was the mainstream, it quickly became a popular pastry shop by selling cakes using fresh cream.
A 4-minute walk from Exit 1 of Takaoka Station on the Sakura-dori Line, and about 40m south of the Higashi-Hakata intersection on Route 41.
The parking lot can also park 36 cars, so it is a nice point for Nagoya citizens who live in a car society.
Inside the Store where a Nostalgic World Spreads
When you enter the store, a nostalgic world spreads out as if you slipped back in time to the Showa era. With 80 seats, it is spacious enough. The brick-like partitions, stained glass, and antique indirect lighting on the red leather sofa will make you feel refreshed whenever you come.
The low tables and chairs are also typical of an old-fashioned coffee shop. It is said that the antiques in the store were collected by the previous generation as a hobby.
The lighting inside the store is also a decorative design that is rarely seen these days. Each item complements the retro space.
Western Sweets that can be Enjoyed from the 200 yen Range
Since its founding, the fresh cream has been sweetened so that it can be eaten deliciously even after long time.
Western confectionery is a must-try when you visit Bonbon. You can always enjoy more than 30 kinds of cakes at reasonable prices starting from 200 yen. Bonbon's motto is "Delicious food at a reasonable price", and even now it is made by skilled patissiers in their basement factory.
There are so many kinds of sweets that I always can't decide.
Savarin 270 yen
The ever-popular menu items are “Savarin”, “Maron”, and “Bonbon Nama Roll”. This time, I ordered the savarin and the Bonbon Nama roll.
Savarin is a sponge cake soaked in rum for adults. When you eat it, the rum spreads in your mouth. The rum overflows so much that you might get drunk, so it's a cake recommended for those who don't like sweets.
Bonbon Nama Roll 230 yen
The shop's signature product, "Bonbon Nama Roll". The choux skin is characteristic, and the middle contains chestnut cream.
Omelette 270 yen
This omelet is something that we would like to recommend to those who visit the shop early in the morning. Inside is plenty of fresh cream, strawberries and bananas.
If there are other cakes you want to eat, they may sell out, so we recommend going early.
Pudding royal 600 yen
In addition, parfait menus that use plenty of fruits such as "Pudding Royal” and “Chocolate Parfait” are also popular. Pudding Royal is exciting from the appearance, isn't it?
