[Moriyama-ku] Let's Go to Obata Ryokuchi, a City Park with Rich Forests!
Table of Contents
"Obata Ryokuchi" takes advantage of the vast nature that straddles Moriyama Ward, Nagoya City and Owariasahi City. It is a city park full of natural forests, ponds, and popular playground equipment for children.
In April 2021, a restaurant and barbecue site "Obatta betta" will be established based on the concept of "catching the forest! This is a spot where you can forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy yourself.
This time, we will introduce the attractions of Obata Ryokuchi.
A rare park where you can observe nature
Obata Ryokuchi is located in Moriyama Ward, Nagoya City. An integrated green space consisting of four gardens: main garden, west garden, east garden, and central garden. Many wild birds and insects inhabit the vast 76.3ha site. It is a rare park where you can enjoy forest bathing and observe nature. There are many playground equipment, a ball game field, a water playground, etc., and everyone from children to the elderly can enjoy it.
Let's start with the West Garden!
Healthy and enjoyable "West Garden"
A large, wide roller slide
The West Park features a "Children's Square" with 10 types of large playground equipment, a "Children's Square" with a roller slide, and other playground equipment for infants and children alike. At the administration building next to the children's playground, "Kanpokkuri" and "stilts" are available for rent.
The area is divided, so you can enjoy it with peace of mind according to your kids' age.
There are also facilities that adults can enjoy, such as tennis courts with 12 artificial turf, a baseball field, and a field where you can play ground golf.
Other than that, there were people walking on the promenade, people having picnics on the carefully maintained lawn, and so on.
There is also a training room in the park, so you can enjoy it in a healthy way throughout the west garden.
Next, let's go to the main garden and the central garden!
The main garden and central garden are located about 5 minutes by car from the west garden.
Main Garden and Central Garden where you can come in contact with nature
In the main garden, in addition to the newly created facility "Obatta betta", playground equipment and a lawn area, it is a spot where you can get close to nature.
Immediately after entering the parking lot, there is a buffet-style restaurant "Mameboshi" that uses carefully selected ingredients. This is a popular restaurant that has long queues since it opened.

Like the west garden, the main garden has combination playground equipment that children can enjoy. We also recommend playing badminton and catchball on the spacious lawn.
Even small children can run around to the fullest.
There is also a small river at the back of the grass plaza. Visitors can play in the water in summer and enjoy watching fireflies every year as the local elementary school releases firefly larvae.
Is this Nagoya? The more you feel, the more natural it is.
At Obata Ryokuchi, there is a walking course called the Forest Bathing Course, so we decided to walk a little towards the central garden.
With just a short walk, you'll be on a walking path in the forest in no time.
While walking, I found a "mame-nashi (callery pear)" tree! Endangered and endemic to the Tokai region, it is a deciduous small tree that comes into full bloom when the cherry blossoms are falling.
It is said to be a survivor of the Ice Age. In autumn, it bears reddish-brown fruit with a diameter of about 1 cm that closely resembles a pear.
Passing through the walking path, we came to "Tatsumaki Pond," a pond with a circumference of about 500 meters, where you can feel the chirping of birds and the swaying of trees. There is also a pavilion and an explanatory board about the creatures that live in the pond.
Midoriga-ike Pond, which is larger than Tatsumaki Pond and has a circumference of about 1.2 km, is located on the north bank of the pond. The pond is visited by waterfowl, and different wild birds can be observed each season.
The cosmos flowers were also in full bloom.
There are benches around the pond, so it's a perfect place to forget about the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Bass fishing is also allowed here, which is rare in Nagoya, so I saw some people enjoying fishing here and there.
On the way to the aquatic garden, there was also a "dragonfly pond. This pond is also maintained by volunteers, and tadpoles, fireflies, stag beetles, and rhinoceros beetles can be seen here.
I walked from the main garden for about 20 minutes and came to the aquatic garden.
Here, a wetland where rare and valuable wetland organisms can breed has been preserved by the volunteer "Aquatic Garden Growing Society" and the Obata Green Space Management Office staff.
Because it is a closed area, it is covered with a fence, but it is said that it will be open to the public for one month in the spring.
Obata Ryokuchi is a city park that makes you feel like you are in the forest even though it is located in Nagoya city. Cherry blossom viewing in the spring, swimming in the stream in the summer, autumn leaves in the fall, and migratory birds in the winter.
It is a place of relaxation where everyone can gather throughout the year. There are plenty of parking lots, so it's convenient for going out, so please come and visit us.
Parking is available (except for the West Garden parking lot) from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from October to March. Please note that the gates cannot be opened after closing.
