​LAMP LIGHT BOOKS HOTEL nagoya opened on February 20, 2018 in Fushimi, Nagoya under the unique concept of "a hotel that travels the world of books. " It is a hotel and café with a 24-hour book café where you can immerse yourself in the world of books.

Lamplight Books Hotel Nagoya is a concept hotel under the theme of "a hotel that travels the world of books" operated by "Solare Hotels and Resorts," which operates accommodation facilities throughout Japan. With guest rooms designed with a focus on comfort for reading books, a book café with approximately 3,000 books available 24 hours a day, and drinks and food to enjoy while reading books, this is truly a facility for traveling through the world of books. Even those who are not staying at the hotel can spend a comfortable time with books as a place of rest and relaxation.

Hotel reception. The staff's uniforms are inspired by a bookstore. All staff members are in charge of hotel/bookstore/café.

The reception counter is inspired by a shape of book. The concept is reflected in every detail. Looking for book motifs is another way to enjoy the space.

The key to your room is this black card. It also serves as a secure card for the elevator. The card case can be taken home as a bookmark by cutting off the logo part.

On the first floor of the hotel is the book café "LAMP LIGHT BOOKS CAFE" which is open 24 hours a day. About 3,000 books, mainly in the "travel" and "mystery" genres, have been selected. Of course, books can be purchased 24 hours a day. The genres of "Travel" and "Mystery" are based on our hope that you will enjoy an extraordinary and exciting experience like traveling. Please try to find your own favorite book.

A large book which stands out at the entrance. This is a collection of works by Sebastião Salgado, a famous Brazilian photographer. This is a rare book limited to 2,500 copies. Not for sale.

The chairs in the café have a V-shaped backrest, which fits comfortably against your back and makes you stand up straight. It was very comfortable to read a book. There are 32 seats.

All seats have power outlets and Wi-Fi. You can use it for a little desk work in the morning or after work. It's great for a business use, too.

The name "Lamplight" means that the lights stay on for 24 hours. There are many lamps in the store.

The book selection is handled by "Reading Style", a bookstore and book café management consulting company in Marunouchi, Tokyo. In this issue, we would like to introduce a few recommended books from the "Book Guide" that was placed in the store.

"Egawa Ranko" Shunyodo Shoten ¥1,300

To commemorate the opening of LAMP LIGHT BOOKS HOTEL, an attempt was made to independently reprint out-of-print books. Conceived by Edogawa Rampo, the book is a relay of stories written by six authors in the history of mystery novels: Yokomizo Seishi, Koga Saburo, Oshita Udaru, Yumeno Kyusaku, and Morishita Uson.

"Question" by Michi Tanaka, Bungeishunju, ¥2,300

The book contains 356 questions such as "What is your favorite problem?", ""Does the heart grow old too?" The book is written by Michi Tanaka, who was an early member of the Theatre Company "Tenjyo Zashiki" and served as secretary and manager of Shuji Terayama for 16 years. You can enjoy the encounter with questions that you would never think about unless you are asked them again, the time to think about the mystery of yourself, and the journey around questions that have no answers.

"The Map that Stumped the World" by Edward Brooke-Hitching, Nikkei National Geographic, Inc. ￥2,700

This book, published by Nikkei National Geographic, contains more than 130 beautiful old maps, rare illustrations, and photographs, as well as a visionary world of countries, islands, cities, mountains, rivers, continents, and species once thought to exist. Countries and islands once thought to be real, such as "In the Atlantic Ocean there is a large rectangular island with seven cities," "California is an island surrounded by the sea and is an all-female paradise," and "Patagonia in South America is home to giants nearly three meters high." This exciting book is a compilation of old maps of countries and islands that were once thought to exist.

"The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Allan Poe, Shinchosha　￥430

A short story by Edgar Allan Poe published in 1839. The narrator is invited to the mansion where his old friend Asher lives with his sister, and describes the various bizarre events he experiences during his stay there in this gothic fantasy novel.

Exclusive Foods to Enjoy while Reading Books

At "LAMP LIGHT BOOKS CAFE," you can enjoy drinks such as coffee and tea, as well as foods such as open sandwiches that you can easily eat with a book in hand. There is also a unique menu using Nagoya's local Hatcho miso. Food is available from 7:00 to 22:00, and drinks are available 24 hours a day. The cafe has a very open atmosphere, so even those who are not staying overnight can feel free to stop by. *To-go is only available for drinks.

The café's top recommendation is the open sandwich, which changes daily. It is a hearty dish with a variety of ingredients on hard bread. It can be eaten with one hand while reading a book. A small square pizza, "Pizza Crack," is also available.

This is "gratin berry," a sweet treat made by hollowing out a small loaf of bread and baking it with mixed berries, custard, and whipped cream. The mild sweetness makes it enjoyable as a meal or a snack. The tartness of the berries is refreshing, and I finished it off quickly.

Rooms where You can Dive in the World of Books

Next, we would like to introduce you to the guest rooms, which have been carefully designed with the comfort of reading a book as the first priority. There are a total of 70 guest rooms on the 2nd through 13th floors. All rooms are decorated in a modern style with brown as the base color and black as an accent. They have folded ceilings and large windows, giving them a very open feeling.

There are 5 types of rooms: Single, Moderate Single, Double, Moderate Double, and Moderate Twin. Moderate type rooms have a balcony facing a lush green park. It is nice to take a deep breath on the balcony in between reading. You can enjoy cherry blossoms in spring.

Lots of Tricks to Read Books Comfortably

And in keeping with the theme of the hotel as "a hotel that takes you on a journey through the world of books," there were many innovations to immerse you in the world of books, including lighting that is easy on the eyes, indirect dimmable lighting and reading lamps, and an armchair sofa with an ottoman.

A few recommended books are displayed on the wall next to the bed. The books installed vary from room to room, and the selections are more illustrations and photos than text.

Armchair sofa with ottoman. It provides the perfect position for reading a book. You can stretch out your legs so you can relax more and immerse yourself in reading.

A dimmable reading light next to the sofa and at the bedside. The angle can be changed freely, so it was easy to illuminate the hand.

It is also recommended to take away coffee or tea from the café and read in your room at leisure.

I actually tried reading in the guest room and found the ottoman sofa to be very comfortable and pleasant to read on. The book genres of "travel" and "mystery" are also very good as they provide an exciting and unusual experience.
