Enrich the connection between people and space through plants - "atelier/en’s" (Green Design En's), Nagoya

In December 2020, a wonderful “atelier/en’s” with lush greenery opened in Marunouchi, Naka-ku, Nagoya. This is a concept shop created by Green Design En's Co., Ltd., which is based in Inazawa City. There are plants and pots of artists that will change the space of the room, and once you step in, you will be enveloped in a mysterious atmosphere.

This time, at "atelier/en's", we interviewed Mr. Atsushi Teranishi, the representative director, about the commitment of Green Design En's, the purpose of atelier/en's, and future prospects.

Commitment of Green Design En's

– Does Green Design En's focus on garden design and construction?

Mr. Teranishi: "We do everything from garden design and construction to tree maintenance and exterior design. We also sell indoor greenery at atelier/en's and do other plant-related work from various angles."

-You said that you founded your company in 2008, but were you involved in landscaping and botanical work before that?

Mr. Teranishi: "When I was 20 years old, I was introduced to a landscape gardening company. As I worked, I fell in love with plants, and five years later, I decided to go independent. And when I was 25, I started Green Design En's."

-What is it about being fascinated by plants?

Mr. Teranishi: “Plants are living things, so they change every day. The atmosphere is completely different depending on how you plant them.

A customer's house built in the past

-I see. I think there are many interesting and difficult aspects of working with plants.

Mr. Teranishi: "It's about incorporating our customer's requests and creating our own colors. It's not about pushing things, it's the color of the EN'S brand. We think about the shape and balance that suit the house, and look for a tree shape that fits the image.

We plant each tree with care

-That commitment leads to the company's concept of "enriching the connection between people and spaces through plants."

Mr. Teranishi: "That's right. The EN in EN'S is derived from the word "circle" (things connected in a circle), and has various EN meanings such as destiny, garden, circle, etc. I would like to cherish connecting these widely.

Also, many people worry about managing plants after they are planted, but EN'S' work does not end with planting, but we would like you to watch the growth of the garden together by performing maintenance such as pruning and disinfection from there. "

Green creates a warm atmosphere

Harmony of buildings and plants

Opened atelier/en's in Marunouchi in December 2020!

Inside atelier/en's

-What kind of place is this atelier/en's?

Mr. Teranishi: "This place opened as an EN'S concept shop. I've always wanted to open a shop like this, but I couldn't find a good property. I searched for about a year and a half and finally found this place."

Potted plants of various sizes line up

-It's a peaceful place along the river near Endoji shopping arcade.

Mr. Teranishi: "Because it's along the river, you can see the outside of the windows and get a lot of sunlight. I decided that the spaciousness and interior fit the image of atelier/en's. The concept here is "green & craftsman", and I want to make it a place where I can convey the wonders of craftsmen and the charm of plants."

Labo atmosphere

What kind of things do you have in -atelier/en's?

Mr. Teranishi: "Mainly foliage plants and pots of artists. I choose and place one by one, mainly foliage plants, that have a nice atmosphere. There are various sizes, from small ones that can be placed on the desk to large ones that can be placed in the entrance, living room, or bedroom. For the potted plants, I contacted the artist I like and negotiated to have their work placed."

-There is also a coffee counter in the store, can I drink here?

Mr. Teranishi: "Yes, we only sell takeout coffee. It's an original blended coffee made by a professional roaster. There are two flavors: 'NATURAL', which has a gentle image when you smell the scent of plants, and 'HARD,' which is a deep blend with an image of the scent of soil."

Order your favorite coffee at the counter

-The combination of coffee with the plant atelier/en's is unexpected.

Mr. Teranishi: "When I opened atelier/en's, I originally wanted to serve coffee. I think there is a unique atmosphere that can be felt in this space with a lot of greenery. I want people to feel that while drinking coffee, and to take a closer look at the plants."

Future Prospects of Green Design En's

Unique and pretty trees line up

The opening of atelier/en's seems to expand the range of things that can be challenged.

Mr. Teranishi: "Yes. One of our goals is to have people experience the charm of plants, but we are planning to develop apparel and other products in the future rather than just being an ordinary foliage plant store, so I would like to use green as an opportunity to propose lifestyle ideas.

For example, at atelier/en's, we regularly hold solo exhibitions in collaboration with artists, and hold events such as garden consultations. It's been a few months since atelier/en's opened, so it's still in the process of development, but I'm thinking of spreading EN'S as a brand. "

-Finally, please tell us about the charm of having plants in the space.

Teranishi: "The impression of a space changes dramatically with or without plants. It is interesting to be able to design various spaces depending on the shape of the trees and the type of plants. Also, plants are living creatures, so the healing aspect is, of course, watching them grow. When you see little sprouts and branches growing, you become even more attached to them.

-thank you very much!
