"BEN'S MORNING CAFE" is located near the Kiso River in Kisogawa Town, Ichinomiya City. It takes about 5 minutes by car from Meitetsu Kuroda Station. It takes about 45 minutes by car from Nagoya city.

As you drive, you will see a round sign with the BEN'S MORNING CAFE logo "B". It is also a nice point that the parking lot is spacious for 21 cars.

Upon entering the restaurant, one can feel the warmth of the trees in the décor, tables and chairs. And in the center of the restaurant is a counter where plants are planted. Sunlight pours in through the large windows, creating an open space where you can enjoy the view of the lawn and trees outside from inside the restaurant.

First, we interviewed the owner, Mr. Nagao.

– Please tell us about the process leading up to the opening of the shop.

Mr. Nagao: "I originally operated a restaurant in Vietnam when I was a university student. However, when I temporarily returned to Japan for my graduation thesis, I was unable to return to Vietnam due to the COVID-19. I thought about what to do now that I had lost my job, and decided to open a morning restaurant here in Ichinomiya City, my hometown, which I had always loved.

In front of this shop, there was originally a morning breakfast shop crowded with locals. There are no coffee shops in this area, so I thought it would be nice to open a morning breakfast cafe where the neighbors can enjoy.

Now, neighbors of all ages, from 20s to 90s, come to visit us. There are also many customers from other cities a little further away and from Nagoya."

– Please tell us about the concept of the store.

Mr. Nagao: "We are particular about local production for local consumption. We use eggs, milk, rice, miso, etc. from local producers. We would like to use locally produced products as much as possible.

In addition, the paintings displayed in the store are also works by local artists. ”

– I am curious about the name of the shop and the character BEN.

Mr. Nagao: "I imagined the main character actor in my favorite movie. The name BEN is the name of the character in the movie. I thought it was a name that anyone could easily remember and be familiar with, so I used it as the name of the restaurant. The actor's painting is also displayed in the restaurant."

– Please tell us what you are particular about with the French press.

Mr. Nagao: “I used a French press because I wanted to serve freshly brewed coffee that was extracted from beans on the spot after receiving an order, rather than coffee that was made in advance like a machine.

Beans are purchased directly from a dedicated roastery in Gifu Prefecture. Our French press makes about 2 cups of coffee. I would be happy if you could enjoy the slow time in the morning. ”

– What were your thoughts on the main menu donuts?

Mr. Nagao:I really wanted to serve donuts at a cafe in the morning, but I actually don't like sweets. But when I visited a cafe in Nara Prefecture, I ate the handmade donuts that were served there and they were really delicious. I was moved by how delicious handmade donuts are.

The shop's donuts use domestic wheat, local eggs, and milk. Handmade without using molds. So each shape is slightly different. From around 7 o'clock in the morning, more and more donuts will be lined up in the showcase. ”
