Nagoya's Long-established Coffee Shop, "Hase Coffee"

Hase Coffee is a long-established coffee shop in Nagoya with a history of 68 years. Since its founding, it has been loved for a long time. It is a shop that boasts "Ogura Toast" using plenty of Ogura (red bean) and specialty "Blend Coffee".
This time, we will introduce you to the history of "Hase Coffee" and the recommended menu.

68 Years of History
From Parent to Child

Hase Coffee is a 5-minute walk from Nagoya Municipal Subway "Nagoya" Station Exit 1. It is surrounded by office buildings, and has a distinctive retro appearance that makes you feel nostalgic in the middle of the city.

Hase Coffee before renovation (right photo) and now (right photo)

Hase Coffee was founded in 1954. It is a coffee shop with a long history that has been passed down from parent to child for generations. 16 years ago in 2007 (left photo), it was renovated into the current Hase Coffee (right photo).

The menu is written on a wooden top that gives off a strong presence, the water tank, and the multiple paintings on the wallpaper.

The reason we left the counter seats after the renovation was because we wanted to create a restaurant with the same atmosphere as when we first opened. We are close to our customers and can easily talk to them. It is such a homely space.

The interior of the store has a calm atmosphere with a retro feel, such as brick-like wallpaper and brown-colored furniture. Of course, it can be used by multiple people, but there are also counter seats, so even one person can enter without hesitation.

The photographs displayed throughout the store were taken by customers who have known the restaurant for a long time. There are only wonderful photos, so please check them out when you visit the shop.

Requires some "Fine Tuning", their Special Coffee

Hase coffee's blended coffee is characterized by its deep, bitter taste.

Coffee beans are blended with various beans procured from several coffee shops to create a unique taste of the shop. Since the types of beans that are procured also change subtly each time, it is said that they are making "fine adjustments" by changing the blend of beans. It seems that they are trying to provide the same quality as much as possible without taste unevenness.

The coffee beans are ground at the shop and extracted with flannel drip. The method of grinding the beans is the same as it was at the time, handed down from generation to generation, and nothing special has been done. The ice used in the shop is made from ice cubes sold by an ice shop, and the iced coffee is chilled by pouring hot coffee into a glass full of ice.

Don't do anything "special" and stay true to the "basics". The accumulation of such processes is the secret to deep coffee.

Popular Morning Breakfast Menu

Hase Coffee's signboard menu "Ogura Toast Set"

Ogura (red bean paste) Toast Set is Hase Coffee's most popular morning breakfast menu. For an additional 150 yen, you can get Ogura toast, yogurt, and a boiled egg with your drink of choice.

The ogura bean paste, which is spread over the toasted bread, seems to be made by mixing homemade and commercially available ones. The sweet bean paste, which is neither too sweet nor too proteinous, goes well with the bitter blended coffee.

You can order another cup of blended coffee for an additional 250 yen, so it's nice when you want to relax more.

In addition to blended coffee, “Cafe au Lait” is also a popular menu item at Hase Coffee. The somewhat nostalgic cafe au lait with its milky taste is loved by everyone from children to adults.

In addition to the Ogura toast set, morning breakfast menu has a toast set and a cheese toast set.

A set: Toast set (your favorite drink + 80 yen)
B set: Ogura toast set (your favorite drink + 150 yen)
C set: Cheese toast set (your favorite drink + 200 yen)

You can enjoy different flavors according to your mood of the day.

There are many drink menus in the 400 yen to 500 yen range, and the price is reasonable, so it is a shop that is kind to your wallet. It's nice to be able to have morning breakfast from 540 yen.

Speciality Sandwiches

"Ogura (red bean paste) Toast" is not the only popular menu item.

Mixed sandwich ¥750 (tax included)

The voluminous "mixed sandwich" is also the store's signature menu. Thick bacon and tomato, crunchy lettuce and cucumber are sandwiched between the fluffy bread.
The meaty bacon with just the right amount of saltiness goes well with the slightly sweet bread.

Baked egg sandwich ¥700 (tax included)

"Baked egg sandwich" is also one of the popular menus. The feature is that they use baked eggs instead of boiled eggs. The combination of the sweetness of the egg, ketchup, and mayonnaise is exquisite, and there are many fans of this egg sandwich. The crunchiness of the cucumber is a good accent.

"Because it is a luxury thing, it is difficult to find a coffee that suits everyone, but we would like to offer even more delicious coffee in the future," said owner Akihiro Shibata.

Please enjoy the special menu in the retro atmosphere that has been passed down from generation to generation.
