[Tokoname city] Old House Cafe "Veg and spice om om om" where you can Find Curry and Coffee

Nagoya city Meito-ku
Posting date: 2019.10.10

It all started with a music even
"Kominka festival"

A husband who was a businessman and a musician, and a wife who traveled around the world and studied yoga. Why did they open an old private house cafe together?

Hiromi-san: "It all started in 2016 when my husband organized a music event called "KOMINKA FESTIVAL," which was held in an old private house. I was attracted to the fact that this event was an opportunity for people to connect and influence each other, and that we were able to create such a place. And I want to synergize with everyone. That is the kind of place I want to create."

Currently, the second floor is also rented out so that various workshops can be held.

Why this location?

Hiromi-san: “An old private house can be built cheaper than building from scratch. This old private house was originally built like Kanji "田" in Chinese characters, so there was no wasted space. That was the appeal.”

Indeed, the inside of the shop feels very spacious for the size of the original building. There is a sense of openness. The design of the rice paddy character makes the space feel more open and spacious.

A couple who can make their ideals a reality. It's not something you can do easily.

Unconditional love from a DIY buddy

Fumihiko-san: "We didn't do everything ourselves, but acquaintances and friends came to help us. They came without saying anything."

Hiromi-san: "Free love! They didn't get anything, but all kinds of people came to help me for free. The love around me helped me."

While making it with his friends, he also asked the carpenter to do the important parts of the building. What a moving story. It means that the couple's popularity is so strong.

Amma's Curry & Master's Coffee

Recommendation 1: "Amma's Curry"

AmmaAmma's Curry Veg (single item 1000 yen / drink set 1200 yen)

Amma means "mother" in Sri Lankan language. It is a curry that reproduces the taste of Amma that I have eaten while traveling with my family in India and Sri Lanka.

It is cooked with 6 types of taste (sweet, salty, pungent, sour, bitter, and astringent) and high-quality vegetable oil.

The specialty is home-grown vegetables and herbs. The food is seasoned with herbs and spices, and no processed products are used. They go to the fields in the morning to harvest what they eat that day and prepare it before the store opens, so that they can take in the energy of the sun.

This time I had a Veg set with plenty of vegetables.

As one would expect from morning-harvested vegetables! The raw vegetables are very fresh and do not smell green. The vegetables are seasoned only with herbs and spices, and no scientific seasonings are used, so there are no unwanted flavors and you feel light after eating. The word "spice" conjures up images of spiciness for Japanese people, but spiciness is not the only kind of spice.

The appetizing aroma of ginger and turmeric spread in my mouth, and I immediately felt as if I had flown to India and Sri Lanka. I feel my body is warming up.

*Vegetables change depending on the season.

Recommendation 2: Coffee made by the owner

Every morning from 5:00, they prepare the amount of coffee beans to be used for the day. After sorting the beans, they are hand-roasted. The master's specialty coffee is "Matsuya style".

Matsuya style is a brewing method originating from Nagoya that takes 3 to 5 minutes for steeping, and is characterized by its low acidity and refreshing taste. The owner carefully brews each cup of coffee, which has a soft, aromatic, and refreshing taste.

Coffee after having Amma's curry is like a blessing time.

I want this store to be a place where people can grow together

Finally, I asked about the future prospects of the couple.

Hiromi-san: "I would like to use the workshop space on the second floor to make it a place where people can connect with each other. We want to make it a place that can be used freely by people who want to try something or have the desire to do so. As we continue to change, we will create something good and make it even better. That is the kind of place we want to be."

The husband, Fumihiko-san, nodded calmly next to his wife.

Finally, when I interviewed veg and spice om om om this time, what I felt most was the "undeniably honest lifestyle". We don't do what we don't agree with.

Growing vegetables and roasting coffee takes a lot of time and effort, but I want people to eat delicious, healthy food. And they don't give out anything like that. I felt such a straight commitment.

I thought that many people naturally gather here because they are such a gentle and pure couple.
