Komeda Nagomi Cafe Okagean: A Sister Brand of Komeda Coffee Shop in Nagoya!

Komeda Nagomi Cafe Okagean: A Sister Brand of Komeda Coffee Shop in Nagoya!

As a long-established coffee shop that originated in Nagoya, “Komeda Coffee Shop” (“Komeda”) has more than 900 stores not only in Aichi Prefecture but also throughout Japan. Its sister brand, “Komeda Nagomi Cafe Okagean” (“Okagean”), is based on the concept of “Japanese” and offers a different atmosphere and menu from that of Komeda.

On February 20, 2023, Okagean Honten (Main Branch) will open next to Komeda Honten in Mizuho-ku, Nagoya City! We will introduce the difference from Komeda and what kind of restaurant it is.

What is Okagean?

“Okagean” is Komeda’s sister brand.

Established in 1999, the company currently operates 12 stores in Aichi, Tokyo, and Kanagawa, and on February 20, 2023, its 13th main store opened in Mizuho-ku, Nagoya (next to the Komeda main branch).

The building in the front is “Okagean Honten”. The building in the back is the “Komeda Honten” and is located on the same site. The exterior of the building is a Japanese-style structure with a tiled roof.

The concept of Okagean is to provide a relaxing experience that is different from that of Komeda, where you can spend a relaxing “Toki” (time) and a heart-warming “Ma” (space) to enjoy a sweet treat.

The menu is also different from that of Komeda, with sweets such as matcha and hojicha (roasted green tea), sweet dishes such as dango (sweet rice dumpling) and anmitsu (mitsumame topped with bean jam), and meals such as kishimen and ozoni (rice cake with soup).

Sustainably Made Main Branch

The interior of the main store, which opened in February, is richly decorated with wood for a soothing effect. The tables in the store are made of thinned wood from the “Komeda Forest” in Komono-cho, Mie Prefecture, a forest that Komeda is working to preserve.

The building is also built in a sustainable manner, with some of the waste materials from the former Komeda main store recycled and solar panels installed.

And look at the chairs! Unlike Komeda’s red sofas, these sofas are matcha color. Also, the legs are box-shaped at Komeda, but Okagedan has four legs. You can also enjoy the small differences between the two.

Electricity outlets are also provided near the tables. Seats are wider and more spacious than those at Komeda, so you are likely to feel comfortable and stay longer.

Even the menus and hand towels are all matcha color. By the way, the brown color of the logo resembles the red bean paste.

What about Morning Breakfast at Okagean?

“Onigiri Set Menu” with freshly made, fluffy rice balls

Seasonal Japanese sweets “Ochanoko Set Menu”

Morning breakfast service at Okagean is available until 11:00 a.m.
Order your favorite drink and you can choose any one of the three sets for free.

・”Onigiri Set Menu”: rice ball, miso soup, choose rice ball flavor from ume plum/mackerel/kelp/Japanese yew *depends on the store
・”Seasonal Wagashi Ochanoko Set Menu”: 1 type of seasonal ochanoko such as Dorayaki or Ohagi
・”Ochazuke set” (rice in soup with special soup stock): either one type of ume kelp or mackerel kelp *Some stores do not offer this set.

There is no toast in the morning breakfast menu at Okagean.

Grill the Chewy Dumplings by Yourself!

One of the popular menu items at Okagean is the “Yakimono (grill)” series! This is the especially popular “Dango Zanmai (3 dango) 630 yen”. I tried it right away!

Each of the three, from left to right, comes in three different flavors: kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup) & kinako (soy bean flour), soy sauce, and ogura-an (sweet red bean paste).

First, warm up the grill. Place your hand over the net and when it is hot, place the dango on it.

After 2 to 3 minutes, a nice char will appear along with a fragrant aroma. Turn over and grill both sides. Grill to your liking!

The first dango is dipped in kuromitsu and covered with kinako. The sweet kuromitsu and kinako go perfectly with each other! The dango is also chewy and delicious!

The other one is topped with Ogura-an (sweet red bean paste) as it is. Not too sweet, but it is just the right amount of sweetness!

For the soy sauce, first soak the dango in soy sauce and grill it again on the net. When placed on the net, the fragrant aroma of soy sauce spreads at once! It’s a nostalgic and comforting taste!

“Dango is not enough! I want some more!” Then, you can order a small amount of each item by selecting the “Add” option from the menu below.

・Daifuku (mugwort or plain flavor)
・Gohei Mochi
・Isobe Mochi

Other Drinks and Menu

The photo shows the “Matcha Shake,” coming with a generous portion.

In addition to regular drinks such as coffee and tea, there is a full lineup of drinks such as matcha and hojicha, which are mainly “Japanese” drinks!

Komeda’s signature dish is the famous “Shiro-noir!” At Okagean, the Shiro-noir is now available in a “Japanese” taste. You can choose from a total of five types of soft-serve ice cream, including green tea, hojicha (hojicha may not be available at some stores), and vanilla mix.

It is also nice that there are two sizes to choose from: a standard size and a mini size!

In addition, Okagean also offers a full meal menu. This is the popular “Retro Spaghetti”. The hot griddle and half-boiled egg are perfectly matched with each other! As the name “Retro” suggests, this is a menu item that brings back a sense of nostalgia.

In addition, there is a wide selection of noodles such as “Kishimen” and rice dishes such as “Ozosui” (rice with soup).

Okagean offers a different atmosphere and menu from that of Komeda. You can enjoy a relaxing moment in a soothing space with plenty of woods.
