"Nakagawa Canal"- the Largest Canal in the East

Now, it's time to depart for the Garden Pier! I don't usually get a chance to ride on a boat, so it feels something new to be riding in the heart of Nagoya.

The entire Nakagawa Canal was completed in 1932. At the time of its development, the 8.4-km-long Grand Canal was said to be the "Greatest Canal in the East" and supported Nagoya's industrial development as a key logistics hub.

Once on board, you will be amazed at how close you are to the surface of the water. You will also be surprised at how lush the green is, more than you can imagine. Seeing from the water the scenery that should be familiar to us looks completely different from what we are used to.

The first thing that came into view was the Hiromi Ikoi no Mori. It is a green area that utilizes the site of the Tsuyuhashi Water Treatment Center of the Nagoya City Waterworks and Sewerage Bureau, and has a promenade perfect for jogging.

Next, the warehouse of "Okaya Steel Co., Ltd. Nakagawa Distribution Center" came into view. In order to respond to requests from the local community to maintain and preserve the scenery of warehouses and other buildings with high historical value, the appearance of the building when it was completed in 1934 was reproduced. You can feel the original scenery of the early Showa period.

"VERMICULAR VILLAGE" came into view. It is a complex facility with a restaurant where you can enjoy morning breakfast and lunch menus, a bakery cafe, a book library, cooking classes, etc.

You can also see people eating while enjoying the view of the Nakagawa Canal.

The coffee shop "Coffee Gannen" handled by Fuji Coffee on the opposite bank. The canal side is entirely made of glass, so you can enjoy coffee while watching the boats coming and going and the animals visiting the canal.

Just then, the moss phlox dyed the opposite bank vividly. When we waved our hands, the customer waved back!

The "Municipal Seifunaso" is located just south of Shinohara Bridge. You can see a huge wall relief depicting a ship passing through "Matsushige Locks".

Until 1968, Matsushige Locks connected the Nakagawa Canal and the Horikawa River, allowing ships to come and go.

It is also a great point that they stop by popular spots such as "Canal Resort" and "LaLaport Nagoya Minato AQULS". Many people use boats as a means of transportation.

Was there such a usage!? It was a new discovery.
If you're on a boat, you can enjoy it even along the way!

The Nakagawa Canal is an artificially constructed canal, so there are no waves. Due to its calm waterfront, it is now popular as a venue for water sports such as canoeing and as a venue for art events.

There were people enjoying canoeing on this day as well. We were very happy to see everyone waving their hands when they saw the boat!

You will also notice murals painted on the walls! You will find a mural with a cute design that makes a great photo spot.

Miniature Panama Canal in Nagoya

Cruise Nagoya's biggest attraction! We have come to the "Nakagawa-guchi Passage Gate" where you can experience the Panama Canal in a small way. Once inside, the sluice gate, which had been open until the ship entered, gradually closed.

The canal is a lock-type canal, which allows elevated vessels to pass through by adjusting the volume of water in compartments partitioned by sluice gates.

Between Nagoya Port and Nakagawa Canal, there is a maximum water level difference of 2.4 meters due to the ebb and flow of tides. If you wait patiently, you can see that the water level rises along with the harbor.

This mechanism for adjusting the water level is similar to that of the Panama Canal. You can feel like you are on the Panama Canal while you are in Nagoya.

To Nagoya Port

Passing through Nakagawa-guchi Ferry Gate, the boat entered Nagoya Port. You can see the ferris wheel of Sea Train Land.

There is also a cargo ship typical of the Port of Nagoya.

Once you enter the Nagoya Port, you will again enjoy an open view which is different from that of the Nakagawa Canal. The experience of entering the Nagoya Port by boat was also very exciting, as it is not something what we do on a regular basis.

After about an hour cruise, we arrived at the Garden Pier! Well, it was a lot of fun. We were able to see a side of Nagoya that we had never known before.

By boarding Cruise Nagoya this time, we were able to recognize the charm of the canal again. With the daily efforts of people, it is about to be reborn into a much nicer figure than before.

I would like people who live in Nagoya, as well as tourists, to use this cruise. Even though you are in Nagoya, you can enjoy an extraordinary feeling that is not in Nagoya. By all means, please feel the hidden charm of Nagoya on the cruise Nagoya.

A short movie of Cruise Nagoya is now available!

A short movie showing three generations and three stories spun out on the Nakagawa Canal in a blended story is also available.
