Mr. Maruyama says that furniture is made to be used. Furniture maintenance is sometimes outsourced to specialist craftsmen, depending on the characteristics of the repaired area. After repairing the structural parts as necessary, they remove dirt, fine scratches, and roughness while leaving the vintage texture.

-What is the appeal of Scandinavian vintage furniture?

Maruyama: "I guess it is the harmony of functional beauty and space. Scandinavian furniture has a universal and timeless characteristic. There are so many pieces of Scandinavian furniture that beautifully express the function that the furniture should fulfill as a design.

For example, a chair is a seat. The height and size of the comfortable seat, the angle of the backrest, the shape of the armrests, etc. are beautifully expressed based on the artist's interpretation of how the chair is used, and in many cases, the function itself is expressed as a design, as a simple yet balanced proportion that suits the "human" body.

As a result, there is little excessive decoration, and many pieces look simple and a little rustic at first glance, but this is one of the reasons why they do not become boring even if used for a long time and are not easily influenced by trends. The functionality of the furniture is always necessary, and the universal functionality of the furniture is imbued with a unique beauty.

Another example is harmony with the space. It can be classic in a modern setting, or Western and Japanese. Another characteristic of Scandinavian furniture is that it fits well when combined with different things, such as contrasting colors."

About the future

-What kind of store do you want to make in the future?

Maruyama: “What I am currently doing is connecting designer furniture to customers, but in the future, I want to be involved with customers in a role that comprehensively proposes spaces, including renovations.

What constitutes 'richness' is different for each person. But I think that being happy at home or having a space where you want to be is one of the indicators of 'richness.'

A space where families can gather or want to gather. We want to continue to be a store that proposes scenes of family gatherings."
