After experiencing the charm of tiles, let's learn more about tiles!
In the permanent exhibition room on the 2nd floor, about 1,000 tiles from the tile collection from the ancient times before Christ to the modern 19th century are displayed in different corners by region. The history of tiles, which was born in Egypt before Christ and spread throughout the world, is introduced by representative regions and periods.
This is also the real thing of "the world's oldest tile" reproduced on the first floor. It's hard to believe it was around 2650 B.C., and the colors are still beautiful.
Here is an actual clay peg that was reproduced in the exhibition room on the first floor. Many such valuable collections are also introduced here.
Other highlights include clay tablets used to record and store materials, lusterware with a metallic texture, tiles that decorated mosques in the Middle East, Dutch Delft tiles that were inspired by Chinese blue and white, tiles used for tea ceremony utensils, Spanish and Portuguese tile paintings, modern British tiles, and much more. There are plenty of tile works to be seen.
We were able to know the difference in tiles depending on the country and region.
Sometsuke Old Toilet Collection Exhibition
Finally, let's go to the "Sometsuke old toilet collection exhibition" on the first floor.
“Sometsuke” is a porcelain pottery that originated in China and is characterized by the contrast between indigo blue and white, and its technique. After being made mainly in Arita in Japan, it was made in Seto as well. After the Great Nobi Earthquake of 1891 (Meiji 24), along with the increase in reconstruction demand, gorgeous dyed toilets became popular mainly in places where guests were entertained, such as inns, restaurants, and wealthy mansions.
*Currently, the exhibition is being renewed.
