Inherit the thoughts of parents. "Coffee New Poppy" where you can taste good old coffee in Shikemichi
Table of Contents
Cafe New Poppy opened at the end of January 2019 on Shikemichi, where the history of Nagoya lives on. It is a shop where you can enjoy home-roasted coffee and morning breakfast in the space of a good old coffee shop. The unique style of the food menu, such as "Poppy Curry Rice" and "Teppan Ogura Toast" using coffee rice, is also a hot topic.
Actually, this shop is run by the second-generation master of "Cafe Poppy", which has been in business for nearly 30 years at Meieki since 1977. This time, we listened carefully to the background of the establishment of the shop, the commitment to coffee, and the future prospects.
Shikemichi, where the history of Nagoya lives on
The shop is located in Shikemichi near Endoji Shopping Street in Nishi Ward, Nagoya City. It is a historical area with townhouses and white-walled storehouses lined up.
Inheriting the feelings of parents' shop "Cafe Poppy"
-First of all, please tell us the reason for the birth of “Cafe New Poppy”.
Mr. Bitou: "My parents opened Cafe Poppy two years before I was born. My father passed away early, and my mother continued to run the cafe by herself. Then, when I was 28 years old, I took over Cafe Poppy.
Cafe Poppy was an ordinary coffee shop that had been around for a long time. I wanted to do something more fashionable myself! In December 2010, I closed the shop and started a wholesale business of roasted beans as "BEANS BITOU". The following year, in February 2011, I opened "Cafe Kobe-kan" in Fushimi.
Mr. Bitou: "As a roasted bean wholesaler, I had the opportunity to come into contact with various shops. A small coffee stand, a chain store like Komeda, an old-fashioned coffee shop. I thought that nothing beats history.
I also had my mother help me with 'Cafe Kobe-kan', and customers would often say, 'It's wonderful that you and your mother are doing this together.' I was surprised that people thought so, even though it was something natural to us. Gradually, I began to wonder if it was better to keep the name 'Cafe Poppy'."
Mr. Bitou: "Since the cafe Kobe-kan was in the middle of Fushimi, there were a lot of people who used it for business, it was a very busy shop. I think drinking coffee is a way to pass the time. I started to feel strongly that I wanted to serve coffee at a shop that didn't need a clock if possible. Just when I was thinking about that, I was introduced to this property. Taking over the name 'Poppy' again, it opened as 'Cafe New Poppy'. ”
