[Meito-ku, Nagoya] "NISHIYAMA NAGAYA", A Complex Facility in the Nishiyama Shopping District

Speaking of Hoshigaoka, Nagoya, it is a fashionable area where cafes and restaurants gather.

This time, we would like to introduce the complex facility "NISHIYAMA NAGAYA" that opened last autumn in the fashionable Hoshigaoka area.

Nishiyama Shopping Street

About a 15-minute walk from Hoshigaoka Station is the Nishiyama shopping street, a retro shopping street of the olden days, with an elementary school and park nearby. NISHIYAMA NAGAYA is located in the center of such a shopping street.

NISHIYAMA NAGAYA is a complex facility renovated from an original building in the shopping arcade. The three stores on the first floor are "moegiiro" (baked sweets), "Story Coffee" (coffee), and "Dandelion" (flowers and plants).

On the second floor, there is a rental space with a kitchen, "Kitchen & Space TARI", and the architectural design office of Kohei Uemura, the architect who worked on NISHIYAMA NAGAYA.

I want to create a store that is like a living room in the city
which local residents and visitors can stop by

We asked Mr. Uemura, the architect who worked on NISHIYAMA NAGAYA, how he came to create NISHIYAMA NAGAYA.

Mr. Uemura: "I was participating in a workshop called 'Nagoya Shotengai Open,' which aims to revitalize vacant stores in shopping arcades. I originally wanted to create a store for my wife (owner of moegiiro, a baked sweets store) and a private architectural design office. I thought I could get involved in urban development through my day job as a designer, and through the workshop we decided to launch the Nishiyama Nagoya Project."

Why did you decide to build a complex in the Nishiyama shopping district?

Mr. Uemura: "At first, I thought it would be nice if I could set up my own office and my wife's baked sweets store, but as I participated in the workshop and heard the opinions of many people in the community, I realized that there are not many stores in this shopping district where people can drop by. In order to make the store a place where people can visit with their children to play in the park or on their way for a walk, I thought it would be more interesting to have not only baked goods but also coffee and flowers. I thought it would be more interesting for many people if the shop was filled with a variety of things.

The opening of the Nishiyama Nagaya Project is a workshop in which local people, designers, architects, etc. come up with ideas to actually open the shopping arcade in order to revitalize the shopping arcade as a business run by the city of Nagoya.

Mr. Uemura participated in this workshop. He launched the project to enliven the shopping district by creating a store that would serve as "Nishiyama's living room" where local residents and visitors could stop by.

NISHIYAMA NAGAYA
Introducing 3 shops!

From here, we will introduce three stores on the first floor of NISHIYAMA NAGAYA.

Baked sweets moegiiro

Mr. Uemura's wife works as a patissier at "moegiiro," a handmade baked confectionery shop that focuses on the ingredients.

There are various sweets such as classic sables and scones, seasonal fruit tarts, cakes, and macaroons at the storefront. They use organic and pesticide-free ingredients, so you can enjoy soft and gentle sweets.

"Story Coffee" is a coffee shop where you can taste specialty coffee brewed with a flannel drip method that uses a cloth filter.

Items such as rabbits and keys that appear in Alice in Wonderland are scattered throughout the store, which has a fairy tale motif. At the night cafe, which is open only on Fridays and Saturdays, you can enjoy cocktails made with coffee liqueur.

Kusaki Flower Shop Tanpopo

The flower store "Kusaki-Hana no Mise Tanpopo (dandelion)" handles bouquets, floral arrangements, mixed plants, houseplants, miniature bonsai, and more. The owner, Ms. Ogawa, stocks flowers in lovely and gentle colors. The shop also offers workshops for making wreaths and swags, and is a great place to get in touch with seasonal plants.

Eat-in space

There is an eat-in space on the first floor. You can enjoy chatting and looking at the flowers in the store while drinking the baked goods and coffee you purchased.

It was a weekday morning when we visited, but there were many customers, young and old, male and female, who stopped by. Some of them were regulars, and they even had casual conversations with the store clerks. It has become a place of relaxation for local residents as well!

On the second floor, there is Mr. Uemura's architectural design office and a rental space and showroom of "Irie Seisakusho".

In his day job as an architect, Mr. Uemura designs new construction and renovation of custom house and stores, and also works on renovation of old private houses and custom furniture design. He is also involved in renovating old private houses and designing custom-made furniture.

Next to the architectural design office, there is a rental space "Kitchen & Space TARI" with a kitchen that anyone can use.

Here, various workshops such as yoga classes and design classes are held, home parties with friends, etc. Anyone can use the space. (Advance reservation required)

The permanent kitchen is a made-to-order kitchen by Irie Seisakusho.

It also serves as a showroom, making it an attractive space for those who are considering custom-made kitchens to check the usability with their own hands.

We asked about the recommended points about the custom-made kitchen of Irie Seisakusho.

natural stone table

A table made of natural stone.

It has a luxurious and chic finish, but it is not only visually appealing, it is also a functional marvel. The table is very easy to use, such as being able to place pots and pans on it as it is, and will be appreciated by those who love to cook.

"Miele" electric oven warmer

Electric oven warmer from the German manufacturer "Miele".

Many people don't know how to use foreign-made equipment, so it's very attractive to be able to actually try it while cooking in the rental space.

The faucets are cool too! This exquisite curve is stylish and has a strong presence.

There are very few rental spaces where you can use such a cool kitchen. If you like cooking or are interested in a custom-made kitchen, please try it!

The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes and a refrigerator. To use it, you need to make a reservation in advance, so please apply from the NISHIYAMA NAGAYA website.

Finally, we asked about future prospects.

Ms. Uemura: "It has been a year since NISHIYAMA NAGAYA opened, but I think it is still a little known entity. I would like to bring our delicious baked goods, coffee, and beautiful flowers to as many people as possible. As for my own vision, I hope to enliven the Nishiyama shopping district as a whole. I would like to support nice stores to make it easier to enter the shopping arcade, and plan events to revitalize the shopping arcade."

NISHIYAMA NAGAYA is a wonderful space where you can feel the love of the creators.

I felt such a gentle warmth that makes everyone who visits smile. A place of relaxation where warm-hearted shopkeepers welcome you. Whether you live nearby or not, why not stop by?
