The theme of the North Building is “North Pavilion: A Journey Spanning 3.5 Billion Years – Animals that have Returned to the Sea”. It introduces the world of cetaceans, marine creatures that adapted to life in the water and developed intelligence during the evolution of life.

You will meet orcas, dolphins, beluga whales, and more! Orca and dolphins will be introduced later, along with performances.

“Under the Northern Lights,” where You can Meet the Lovable Beluga

ベルーガ

In the wild, belugas live in the Arctic Ocean. They are characterized by their stocky, white bodies and round, bulging heads called “melon”. Belugas can be seen in only four aquariums in Japan.

On this day, four animals, Tanya, Nana, Hodoi, and Mirai, greeted us.

最年長ベルーガの「ホドイ」

“Hodoi”, the oldest beluga at the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium. He looks at the camera perfectly! His calm appearance is so cute.

タアニャと娘のナナちゃん親子

This is Tanya and her daughter, Nana, and they are always together. They are so dignified that the staff calls them “Master Tanya”.

Now, let’s go back to the North Building!

Could Whales have Walked on Land 53 million Years Ago? “The Sea of Evolution”

進化の海

How did dolphins and whales look like long ago?

The “Sea of Evolution” exhibit shows how mammals that lived on land evolved into the whales that live in the sea today.

5,300万年前のクジラの姿

This is what whales looked like 53 million years ago, when they could walk on land on all four legs. It’s very different from what they look like now, isn’t it?

The museum has the largest number of valuable fossil replicas and whale skeletons on display in Japan. Children can also learn together with the easy-to-understand explanations provided by illustrations and videos.

“Underwater Viewing Seats” to Observe Dolphins Swimming!

Next to it, you can see the “Underwater Viewing Seats”.

You can see dolphins swimming leisurely through a large underwater observation window measuring 4 meters in length by 29 meters in width. The carpeted floor allows you to sit back and relax. It is such a cozy space that you will lose track of time.

Now, let’s go to the outdoor “Shiokaze Plaza”.

Closer than Expected! “Too Close! Goma-chan Deck”

でら近っ!ごまちゃんデッキ

Walk out the door on the 2nd floor of the North Building and you will find “Shiokaze Plaza”. This is a space where eating and drinking are allowed, making it a perfect place for lunch or a break!

Located in the “Shiohake Plaza” is the “Too Close! Goma-chan Deck”, which is newly established in July 2017. Here, Spotted seals and Cape penguins are on display.

Just inside the entrance, there was a Cape penguin. As the name “Too Close!” suggests, you can observe them really close.

I was worried that the penguins would be okay outdoors. But since the Cape penguin is a species that lives in southern Africa, it does not mind the heat of Nagoya. There are many different species of penguins, aren’t there?

ゴマフアザラシ

Next door is a Spotted seal. The name “Spotted seal” comes from the black sesame-like pattern on their skin. This pattern differs from one seal to another.

They were very clever and posed for many photos!

ゴマフアザラシ

It was a great opportunity to see the Spotted seal so up close! Their blank expressions are indescribable.

Both adults and children are sure to be excited, so please stop by.
