Interviews with the artists of the 35th anniversary project

Aoi Yoshida and Masaaki Suzuki. With their daughter in front of Mr. Suzuki's work.

I talked to the artists who happened to be there and were exhibitors of the Oribe-tei 35th Anniversary Commemorative Project, My One of a Kind "Connected Original Landscape".

Aoi Yoshida's work "dials" silk, camellia paper, acrylic paint, dried water paint

Mr. Yoshida: "It is the image of a clock face. The life I spend with my children is a regular life, and although every day seems the same, there are small changes. I expressed the flow of time in such a life by dividing the circle and keeping the colors low."

The soft expression of the two layers of silk makes you feel the gentle flow of time.

Works by Masaaki Suzuki. "Light on the Desk" oil on canvas

Mr. Suzuki: "I assembled the motifs on a stand and painted them exactly as I saw them. I have been painting images of nightscapes, but I no longer felt like they were changing, and I thought about what I wanted to do. While I was painting the nightscape series, the boundaries between people and things became blurred, and I analyzed whether I was interested in the relationship between objects, so I started painting still lifes."

A series of oil on canvas nightscapes, "Streetlight," a work that won the Grand Prix at the Shell Art Awards in 2005.

Mr. Suzuki: "What I am conscious of when assembling motifs is not to install plants or organic objects. Because a story will be generated and the relationship will not be visible. I prefer to inorganic objects here."

Detail of Masaaki Suzuki's work "Light on the Desk"

Lines and spheres are rhythmically lined up on the screen, and the work seems to foreshadow the beginning of something. He will have a solo exhibition at Galleria Finarte next February, so please come and visit.

Kana Sonoda, "Being here from the series 'still lives'" Pigment Print / Brushed with transparent lightfastness medium

We also interviewed Ms. Kana Sonoda.

Ms. Sonoda:Since 1998, I have lived abroad (London, New York, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, etc.) and have pressed the shutter button whenever I came into contact with life and death, city and country, stillness and movement, time and time, space and space...and the feeling of being in between, the turmoil and roughness that I felt there. When I returned to Japan and was searching for a subject, I was fascinated by the sight of discarded and rotting flowers and vegetables in a heap in the frozen ground in winter, covered with frost and breathing bewitchingly in the dawn light. Since then, I have been pursuing the "still lives" series, which is a series of photographs of the in-between of beauty and ugliness, wandering around in spring, summer, fall, and winter, and taking photographs like from a fixed point observation style"

The medium is painted on the surface, and the density of black is different here and there, which is beautiful.

Works by Kana Sonoda. Also the three works on the far right.

There are also Sonoda's works on the shelf in the aisle.

A passage that can be seen from the exit of the gallery space. There is a shelf on the left.

We also interviewed the artists who gathered for the opening party.

Masao Inoue "Looking at the sky from the window" Acrylic and colored pencil on canvas

Mr. Inoue: "Thirty-five years ago, when Oribe-tei was built, I thought it was an unusual building. I like the architecture of Oribe-tei. I painted this picture of the sofa at home. On the sofa, my dog that I had for 16 years used to lie down. For the wall, I painted the window and the other side. There is sadness in this work, but I tried to make it a work in which hope can be seen."

Naoe Kawamura's "Dawn" silk, Yuzen dyeing, stencil dyeing

Ms. Kawamura: "I am inspired by light and work with plant motifs. For my artwork, I start after I have a firm idea of the overall composition."

Enlarged photo of "Dawn" by Naoe Kawamura

The dye is transparent, so the overlapping colors have a beautiful three-dimensional effect.

Ms. Kawamura is turning her art works into products. She create them while having certain images in mind while incorporating contingency. She would like to create new expressions of dyeing while remaining faithful to tradition. With this in mind, she has  registered "Mino Yuzen" as a trademark.

Mino Yuzen products and masks by Naoe Kawamura

Product masks are lined up on the shelf in the aisle. Masks are now essential. It looks good for a special piece for going out.
