The Greenhouse Reopened after Renovation. Enjoy Greens at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens!

"Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens" is located in Chikusa ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture.

It's easy to focus on the zoo, but true to its name, it also has a botanical garden. In the botanical garden, about 7,000 kinds of plants are held and exhibited using greenhouses and natural forests on the hills. It is a healing spot where you can feel nature in the city.

On April 23, 2021, the "Front-Greenhouse", which has been preserved and repaired since 2013 and is a national important cultural property, reopened. The pond where the greenhouse is reflected on the surface of the water was also maintained.

Important Cultural Property "Greenhouse Front Building"

First, go to the Front-Greenhouse, which was reopened in April 2021.

"Nagoya City Higashiyama Botanical Garden the Front-Greenhouse" is the oldest existing public greenhouse in Japan. Since 2013, it has been restored and opened to the public as it was when it first opened.

It is about 66 meters long, about 12 meters high, and consists of five rooms.

First, go straight to the room on the right. Various plants are lined up in a bright glass-enclosed space. In this room, the theme is "fragrance".

For example, these are lemon thyme, sage, pepper, vanilla, and other scents that enrich the dining table. A small amount of fragrant plants can make a dish taste delicious, even if it is not so sweet or salty.

Pay attention not only to the plants, but also to the buildings.

The steel frame was also preserved and repaired. More than 90% of the original construction remains.

manual window opener

In addition, "manual window opening and closing device",

"hewn stone layer," and many other exhibits that show the history of the park since its opening can be seen.

This is one of the "Three Great Sacred Trees of Buddhism", "Muyuju". It is said that Buddha was born when Maya, the holy mother of Buddha, tried to touch this flower.

Easy-to-understand information plates are placed at various locations, so even those who are not familiar with plants can enjoy the tour.

At the back of "Sun Gallery", there are four greenhouses, "Latin American Plant Greenhouse", "Hawaiian House", "Aquatic Plant Room", and "Sagaro Greenhouse".

Central and South American plant greenhouse

First, go to the Central and South American Plant Greenhouse. In 1978, Nagoya entered into a sister city relationship with Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. This greenhouse was built to introduce plants from Central and South America, including Mexico.

The king of cacti, “Kinshachi” is eye-catching!

Hawaiian house

Next, we went to “Sagaro Greenhouse”. This is an exhibition room centered on a cactus called Sagaro (Benkeibashira). You can observe different cacti from the "Central and South American Plant Greenhouse" mentioned earlier.

There was also a carnivorous plant corner!

You can meet and learn about various plants in the greenhouse of Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, as well as the newly renovated "Front Greenhouse ".

Enjoy the scenery of the four seasons!

About 1,000 cherry trees of about 100 species color the cherry blossom corridor in spring. In autumn, about 500 trees around Okuike and the Japanese garden change color, making it one of the best spots for autumn leaves in the city.

In addition, you can enjoy seasonal scenery such as camellia gardens, rose gardens, and flower gardens.

Restaurant "Garden Terrace Higashiyama"

There is also a restaurant "Garden Terrace Higashiyama" on the grounds of the botanical garden!

With the theme of "fun, beauty, and health," you can enjoy an original menu created in the image of Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Enjoy the extraordinary in the botanical garden surrounded by flowers from all over the world.
