Tsurumai is known for its calm atmosphere, even though it is close to the city. Fashionable cafes and specialty shops are dotted around, and you can come across a variety of shops just by taking a walk aimlessly.
"Mond", which I will introduce this time, is a cafe serving home-roasted coffee and medicinal tea. They offer products that are friendly to people and the environment, such as organic and fair trade products.
Located at Nagoya Municipal Subway about 5 minutes walk from exit 1 of "Tsurumai" station. The signboard is posted quietly.
Relocated from Shin-Sakae to Tsurumai
The shop owner, Ami Kawanishi, moved to the Netherlands about three years ago and has been living in Georgia since September of this year. She purchase miscellaneous goods and tableware locally, and manage product planning and sales promotion.
Ami's father is the master. In addition to customer service at the store, the two of them work together to purchase and roast coffee beans.
Mond opened in 2014 at Shin-Sakae in Nagoya as a general merchandise and workshop store, but was originally preceded by Relier, which Amo-san opened at this location in 2011.
In October 2015, we decided to relocate and open in Tsurumai from Shin-Sakae, replacing their sister store Relier. She renovated the shop and opened a coffee stand by themselves while retaining the atmosphere of those days. Her father, who used to run a watch store, started Mond's master with the encouragement of Amo-san. The store just celebrated its 7th anniversary in October.
Making everyday life a little more enjoyable
At Mond's roots in Relier, they hold pop-up sales and workshops of creators' accessories and sundries in order to "help people connect with each other and have a little fun every day". (Workshops will move to Mond from November.)
Even at Mond, they are creating a shop where you can enjoy your daily life even a little by drinking coffee and medicinal tea and talking.
The name of the store, which means "moon" in German, reflects our desire to "propose a lifestyle that gently shines like the moon."
Vintage miscellaneous goods and organic food
The store also carries a variety of unique goods and fair trade and organic food products. We asked them about the key points of their selection.
Ami-san:"Mond's concept is to select products that we want to continue and support, which will eventually create a positive cycle for people, the environment, and society. Foods are mainly locally produced for local consumption and organic products.”
Ami-san:"Before I moved to Georgia, I lived in the Netherlands for about three years, and started buying and selling vintage products. Most of the vintage tableware and miscellaneous goods are handmade and one-of-a-kind. I'm attracted to the excitement of finding something and the story of connecting things that have been handed down for a long time. Eat-in drinks are served in such vintage cups, and you can feel the history of cups that has been around for over 60 years."
These cups and saucers are vintage tableware from the Belgian manufacturer BOCH, made in the 1960s and 1970s. It is decorated with retro and pop plant patterns. Since they are hand painted by artisans, many of them are one-of-a-kind.
The Rusuka series from the Finnish manufacturer ARABIA. Each piece has a different look and feel, much like Japanese Bizen ware. They are popular for making food and sweets look delicious.
"Torii Sauce" in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is a discerning sauce made with raw domestic vegetables, additive-free, and aged in wooden barrels. (Sales end as soon as they run out)
Organic Italian sodas and fresh vegetables. Pesticide-free vegetables from Minami-Chita and other areas around Aichi arrive every Monday and Friday. (Scheduled to end of sale)
Kurata Pepper, the world's most delicious Cambodian pepper, is produced using natural pesticides and fertilizers, and is produced using only the best agricultural methods. It has a good fruity aroma, and many people keep coming back for more. (Sales will end as soon as they run out.)
The master, a former watchmaker, also replaces watch batteries.
