A museum of colors! Tennozu Isle's traditional art supplies lab "PIGMENT"
Table of Contents
This time, we would like to introduce the traditional art supplies lab "PIGMENT" which opened in July 2015 in Tennozu Isle, Tokyo. When you think of an art supply lab, you might think of it as a place where craftsman and artists visit, but PIGMENT is not. Even if you are new to traditional art materials, it is a fun place where you will be drawn into the world of colors before you know it.
In the spacious store of over 200 square meters, there are about 4,500 colors of pigments, more than 200 types of old ink sticks, and rare and high-quality traditional painting materials such as Nikawa, a natural glue made by boiling out animal skins, are lined up in a row. We will tell you all about the charm of PIGMENT, which you should visit even if you are from the Tokai area.
Interior designed by world-famous architect Kengo Kuma
One of the points of PIGMENT is the store design.
Kengo Kuma, a world-famous architect, was in charge of the project. Recently, it became a hot topic in the news of the Tokyo Olympic New National Stadium. The contemporary design, which consists of organic curved surfaces reminiscent of bamboo blinds, is impressive.
It is not just an art store, but a museum, and they want people to enjoy it. They want the general public, even those who are not artists or specialists, to be interested in their store. This is why they are so particular about how they display their art materials, carefully displaying them one by one.
PIGMENT is a spot that is attracting attention not only from Japan, but from all over the world. During the interview, many customers from overseas were visiting. There are so many valuable art supplies that can only be found here. PIGMENT handles over 10,000 items, including 4,500 colors of pigments. We will pick up some and introduce them.
