Who is Shoun Asano?
All of the sculptures on display were created by the concrete artist Shoun Asano. Shoun Asano (1891-1978) was born in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture. From the early Showa period to the Showa 40s, he produced countless concrete dolls. There are many facilities with dozens or even hundreds of statues nearly 2m tall, establishing a unique style of life-size diorama park.
It is said that he has made more than 1,000 concrete statues in his lifetime, which he started making at the age of 33, of which nearly 800 remain in the Tokai region. The three representative spots are Momotaro Shrine (Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture), Goshikien Garden (Nisshin City, Aichi Prefecture), and Sekigahara Warland (Sekigahara Town, Gifu Prefecture). Among fans, it is called “Shoun Asano’s Three Great Sanctuaries”.
Sculptures with somewhat surreal expressions have the power to captivate the viewer.
A battle that unfolds on a vast site!
In the vast grounds of about 10,000 tsubo, a life-size diorama that condensed and reproduced the formation map of the Battle of Sekigahara is displayed. Sekigahara Warland faithfully reproduces famous anecdotal scenes, battle flags, and wind shields, and you can check the placement of each warlord.
Let's take a look at how the battle was reproduced with concrete statues!
This is a popular photo spot. It's where the gun corps holds their guns.
Saizo Kani of the Eastern Army, who is said to be the strongest in the Sengoku period, rides the enemy with a ghastly face! In battle, it is said that he always cut off more heads than he could carry.
It is a wise general who took command in the Western Army, and is the ally of "Mitsunari Ishida", "Yoshitsugu Otani". The scene where he commits suicide due to Hideaki Kobayakawa's betrayal is reproduced.
This is the scene of the head inspection at the last camp of Ieyasu Tokugawa, "Jimbano." As you get closer, you can see the names of the living heads.
Shimazu's camp was the only one that remained between Konishi's and Ishida's camps. Although he had the reputation of being the strongest fighter in the Sengoku period, he participated in the Battle of Sekigahara with only 1,500 troops. Later, he returned to Satsuma with his troops intact by adopting the "sute-gamari" strategy, which has been talked about for generations to come.
Mitsunari Ishida, who fought with Nagamasa Kuroda and others of the Eastern Army at Mt. Sasao.
The route of Sekigahara Warland takes visitors from Mt. Matsuo, home to Hideaki Kobayakawa, known for his betrayal, to Mt. Tenma, where Hideie Ukita and others of the Western Army took up positions, to Mt. Sasao, where Mitsunari Ishida was based, to Jimbano, where the Eastern Army general Ieyasu Tokugawa took up his last position, and to Mt. Nangu, where the Mori forces remained motionless despite being behind the Eastern Army.
The statues of famous warlords have tags with their names written on them, so please enjoy the surreal expressions and your thoughts on each one.
The Ghost of Shingen Takeda! ?
There is also a figure of the military commander "Shingen Takeda" who did not participate in Battle of Sekigahara.
In fact, it seems that this statue of Shingen was made with the setting of a ghost. The billboard reads, "No More Sekigahara Battle," and is the ghost of Shingen Takeda, who prays for peace and calls for an end to this foolish war.
Let's play free games!
Sekigahara Warland offers a variety of free games related to battles. Both children and adults can have fun together, such as "Sengoku Struck Out", "Shuriken Experience", "Matchlock Shooting", and "Sengoku Ring Throw".
