"LE SU," bakery & pastry takeout shop with long-loved delicacy in Nagoya Kanko Hotel

This time, I will introduce "LE SUD", a bakery and pastry take-out shop located in the long-established hotel "Nagoya Kanko Hotel", which was founded in 1936.

They sell breads and cakes that have been loved for generations with the same taste since the shop was founded.

A 2-minute walk from Fushimi Station on Nagoya Municipal Subway, the store faces Hirokoji-dori, Nagoya's main street. Look for the bread sign at the luxurious entrance of the Nagoya Kanko Hotel.

LE SUD

As soon as you enter the entrance, the shop is on your left! It has a chic and elegant atmosphere, and is overflowing with a sense of luxury unique to a hotel.

On the first floor of the Nagoya Kanko Hotel, there is a brasserie and cafe of "LE SUD", and next to it is the bakery and pastry take-out shop that I will introduce this time.

LE SUD

Freshly baked bread is lined up in the spacious shop. When you feel the faint scent of wheat, you can't help but get excited!

I visited the store at 10:00 a.m. on the day of the opening, so there were a few breads that had not yet been baked. The bread is usually ready around 12:00 p.m., so noon is the best time to visit!

LE SUD

There are lots of gorgeous cakes in the showcase next to the cash register! The colorful cakes using various fruits will make you smile just by looking at them.

Hotel traditional brioche anpan
Rows of carefully selected breads

There are more than 30 types of bread at LE SUD! From popular sweets such as red bean buns and Danish pastries, to croissants, white bread, and side dish bread, there is a wide variety. Neatly arranged breads are carefully packed one by one.

Brioche anpan

This brioche anpan has been popular for a long time. The brioche dough is a traditional item of the hotel, and you can enjoy the rich taste of the rich butter. One of the secrets to its popularity is that you can enjoy the unique flavors of the hotel.

Luxury white bread Watagumo 650 yen (tax included) *Limited quantity available

This is the high-class white bread "Watagumo" that was inherited from "Hotel Nagoya Castle". As the name suggests, the dough is light and fluffy like cotton clouds. This is a top-class loaf of bread made with carefully selected domestic ingredients, where you can enjoy an elegant sweetness and richness.

In addition, there are many delicious breads. Boulanger's commitment is packed into each carefully baked bread. Overall, there are many small breads, so you can buy a lot and enjoy various flavors!

"Nagoya Kanko Hotel" and "Hotel Nagoya Castle" -
You can enjoy the taste of two long-established hotels!

Nagoya Kanko Hotel

The main attraction of "LE SUD" is that you can enjoy the taste of two of Nagoya's long-established hotels, "Nagoya Kanko Hotel" and "Hotel Nagoya Castle".

Speaking of "Hotel Nagoya Castle", it is a well-established hotel with a history of more than 50 years since its establishment. (Currently closed due to rebuilding plans.) Products from the two hotels are sold here at Nagoya Kanko Hotel. You can meet products that can only be tasted here, handled by two traditional hotels.

LE SUD

Both the brasserie & cafe and bakery & pastry of LE SUD have just been renewed in the fall of 2020.

The bakery and pastry takeout shop has expanded to about three times the size before the renovation. In this renewal, they put effort into creating an atmosphere that people of all ages can feel free to enter.

It has been reborn as a wonderful shop that makes you want to stop by while walking down Hirokoji-dori.

Using seasonal fruits and seasonal ingredients,
colorful cake

Bread is not the only appeal of LE SUD. The cakes made by patissiers who have participated in the international cooking competition "World Culinary Olympics" are exquisite.

Using seasonal fruits and seasonal ingredients, the colorful cakes that look beautiful are all attractive, and you can't help but be glued to the showcase. It will take me some time to decide which one to choose.

The number one commitment is fresh cream. The fresh cream made using the same old methods, has a rich yet refined sweetness that is not overpowering. By preserving the traditional taste, it will be a taste that will continue to be loved for many years.

Tasted recommended breads and cakes!

From here, I will introduce in detail the 5 breads and 3 cakes recommended by the staff. Start with the bread section!

Popularity No. 1! "Brioche Koshi Anpan"

Brioche strained red bean paste 250 yen (tax included)

The most popular "Brioche Koshi Anpan". It has been a popular menu item for a long time. LE SUD has a rich lineup of anpan, including koshian, tsubuan, and seasonal anpan (cherry blossom, potato, chestnut, etc.). Among them, the most popular one is this strained bean paste.

Filled with smooth strained red bean paste! The richness of the butter and the sweetness of the red bean paste are a perfect match. Black sesame is also a good accent, and it is an elegant anpan that combines Japanese and Western styles.

Popularity No. 2 "Brioche Tsubu Anpan"

Brioche tsubuan bun 250 yen (tax included)

The “tsubuan” version of the brioche koshi anpan that I introduced earlier. The koshian uses black sesame seeds, while the tsubuan uses poppy seeds. Both LE SUD anpans are popular items!

Like the koshi anpan, the tsubu anpan is filled with red bean paste! Inside the red bean paste, there are large grains of bean. Each individual grain gives a nice texture as it is chewed. It is fun to compare the two types of anpan because they are different from each other!

Popularity No. 3 "Nagoya Cochin Egg Cream Bread"

Nagoya Cochin egg cream bread 300 yen (tax included)

Cream bread is the second most popular after Koshi anpan and Tsubu anpan. It's an unusual shape for a cream bread. Actually, this is a white bread cream bread! A recommended item that Boulanger of "LE SUD" carefully selected from the bread dough.

The fluffy dough contains plenty of rich cream! This cream uses Nagoya Cochin eggs, a local ingredient from Nagoya, so the flavor of the eggs is rich and delicious. It's made with Nagoya's specialty, so it's perfect as a souvenir!

Accompanied by wine! "Anchovy Croissant"

Anchovy croissant (3 pieces) 300 yen (tax included)

At first glance, this bread looks like an ordinary croissant. In fact, it has anchovies in the dough! The crispy texture of the croissant and the saltiness of the anchovies that appear here and there make for a great dish. The small size, 3 pieces in a package, makes it a perfect snack with wine or other alcoholic beverages.

Traditional loaf of bread "Kaku Shokupan"

Kaku Shokupan (square white bread) 700 yen (tax included)

The last bread I recommend is "Kaku Shokupan". This is a hard type of bread that is a complete change from the "Watagumo". Soft, fluffy, sweet breads are popular these days, but this "Kaku Shokupan" offers a traditional hard texture.

I had it toasted as is, with nothing else on it. Simply delicious! The more you chew it, the more the taste of wheat comes out. It is not sweet, but a little salty, and you will be very satisfied after eating it. It is a delicious piece of bread that you can eat with your favorite ingredients such as ham.

A little extra here. I would like to introduce a recommended item that I would like to tell you!

A true traditional taste! Excellent "French Toast"

French toast (2 pieces per set with maple syrup) 350 yen (tax included)

"French toast" using "LE SUD" specialty French bread can also be taken out. This is also a classic menu that has been popular for a long time. You can enjoy the taste of the hotel at home!

After heating it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes, pour a lot of maple syrup on it. The egg liquid is soaked into the inside, and it is melty! The richness and sweetness of the egg spread in my mouth, and I couldn't help but say, "It's delicious!"

Next are 3 recommended cakes!

This is the classic! "Strawberry Shortcake"

Strawberry shortcake 600 yen (tax included)

The most popular item in the cake category is the standard “Strawberry Shortcake”. The cake has always had the same taste and has been loved by all generations.

LE SUD's signature fresh cream, sweet and sour strawberries, and the perfect balance of sponge that is neither too hard nor too soft. The cross section is also beautiful. The feeling of happiness after eating is irresistible! It has an attractive taste that makes you want to eat it again.

"Mont Blanc" filled with chestnuts

Mont Blanc 500 yen (tax included)

“Mont Blanc” is the second most popular after “Strawberry Shortcake”. This is also a standard popular item.

The slightly sweet mont blanc is the best combination with the rich fresh cream. This "Mont Blanc" has one chestnut inside. These chestnuts are not too sweet and refreshing, and they go well with fresh cream! Chestnuts are used abundantly, so you can immerse yourself in a luxurious feeling.

Chocolate x Orange x Hojicha "Esor"

Essor 600 yen (tax included)

"Essor" is a milk chocolate cake with hojicha brulee inside. The sourness of orange peel and citrus mousse makes the aftertaste of rich milk chocolate refreshing.

As you continue to eat, you will get a hojicha brulee! The aroma of hojicha is a good accent and gives it a different flavor. A special chocolate cake that can only be eaten here.

hotel-made sweets
"LE SUD" original products are also on sale!

In addition to bread and cakes, the takeout shop also sells sweets, tea, and original goods unique to the hotel.

There are various carefully selected products such as hotel-made cookies and madeleines, honey "Snow White" for toast, and additive-free dried fruits.

Domestic fruit jam is especially popular. There are many types of bread, and many people buy them together with LE SUD bread. They have a wonderful lineup that goes well with bread.

This is "LE SUD" original goods. There are plenty of goods that you can enjoy "LE SUD" at home, such as stylish mugs with logos and original coffee!
