[Nagoya] Recommended Gardens to Visit in the Weekend with Family!

There are various styles of gardens in Nagoya City, from traditional Japanese gardens to Western-style gardens. All of them are easily accessible from the center of Nagoya, and as an oasis in the city, you can gently soothe your weary soul.

This time, we will introduce such gardens in Nagoya City. When winter ends and spring approaches, it becomes fun to go out. Please use it as a reference when you go out.

"Shirotori Garden" that can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons

The Cultural Path

First, let's start with the Shirotori Garden, which is located near Atsuta Shrine.

The Shirotori Garden, one of the largest in the Chubu region, is a pond garden with a theme of a "story of water" from the headwaters to the great sea.

Even though it's not far from Nagoya station, you can enjoy beautiful greenery and flowers.

garden

In the vast garden, you can see the scenery of the headwaters created by waterfalls and gigantic rocks, the scenery of mountain streams with clear streams, and the maple leaves that cover the valley. You can feel the atmosphere of deep mountains and secluded valleys.

Kiyohatei is designed in the image of a swans swooping down.

Kiyohatei is located near the center of Shirotori Garden, on the bank of the stream. Kyoto Sukiya carpenters and Owari carpenters cooperated to create a full-fledged Sukiya architecture using natural materials.

The park is quite large, so if you get tired of walking, take a break at Shioiri-tei. You can enjoy the scenery that changes with the tide in the garden that can be seen from the window.

Enjoying a cup of tea while looking out at the garden is such a luxurious feeling.

A hidden flower garden near Nagoya Port
"Wildflower Garden Bluebonnet"

Wildflower Garden Bluebonnet

"Wildflower Garden Bluebonnet" was born in 2002 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Chubu Electric Power.

In the park, flowers with a wild atmosphere are in full bloom, including the Texas state flower "Bluebonnet", which is also the name of the facility.

Wildflower Village

One of the most impressive features of Bluebonnet is the "Wild Flower Village." In this "natural flower garden," wildflowers (a general term for wild flowers that grow wild in various natural environments) are in full bloom, which is different from the orderly flowers that bloom in flowerbeds.

Wildflower Village

Just walking through the wildflower village will give you the illusion that you have wandered into another world. Since 20 to 40 kinds of seeds are mixed and sown at once, you can enjoy the "blooming relay" in which wild and beautiful flowers change one after another in spring and autumn.

Even though it's nearby, many people don't know about Bluebonnet, but you can enjoy a variety of flowers throughout the four seasons in the garden, which has been created with great attention to detail!

Please take this opportunity to visit.

An urban oasis in the middle of Sakae
"Hisaya Odori Garden Flarie"

Hisaya Odori Garden Flarie

Located at the southernmost end of Hisaya Odori Garden, "Flarie" was reopened on September 27, 2014, formerly known as "Orchid House." This is a hidden gem where you can enjoy an authentic garden all year round, even though it is free of charge.

The name "Flarie" is a coined word of "Furari" (casually/drop-in) + "Flower" + "Atelier", meaning "an atelier full of flowers where you can stop by casually". As the name suggests, it is an oasis in the city where you can forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Flarie

At Flarie, where many flowers bloom throughout the year, you can enjoy a variety of flowers in six different areas.

Harmony Garden is in front of the pond. This is a garden that combines clematis, herbs, and color leaves with colorful roses such as pink, orange, and white. You can enjoy colorful flowers.

Flarie

If you're visiting Sakae, why not take a little detour and visit Flarie?

A healing garden full of seasonal flowers
"The Cultural Path Hyakka-Hyakusou"

Path The Cultural Path

" The Cultural Path Hyakka-Hyakusou" is a former residence originally built in 1920 by the Okatani family, the founding family of Okaya Koki. It had been vacant for a long time, but Nagoya City approached the Okaya family about using the building as a place to take a break when strolling along the "Cultural Path," and the Okaya family readily agreed.

The study hall, tea room, and storehouse were renovated, and a multi-The Cultural Path hall was newly built.

Therefore, the building of "The Cultural Path" is owned by the city of Nagoya, but Hyakka Hyakusa is still owned by the Okaya family.

A Beautiful Garden that Changes with the Seasons
"Tokugawaen", a Feudal Lord's Garden

Owari

Speaking of Nagoya's famous sightseeing spots, it is "Nagoya Castle", but "Tokugawaen" is located in a place not far from there. The seasonal garden that makes you forget the hustle and bustle of the city is an urban oasis that gently soothes the hearts of visitors.

Tokugawaen is a Japanese garden located in Tokugawa-cho, Nagoya. It originated when the second lord of the Owari clan, Mitsutomo, who was the head of the Tokugawa Gosanke family, moved to Ozone Mansion in 1695 (8th year of the Genroku era).

In 1931 (Showa 6), the 19th head of the family, Yoshichika, donated the mansion and garden to the Tokugawaen. After being destroyed by fire during World War II, it was used as a city park, but in 2004 it was renewed as a Japanese garden.

Enjoy seasonal flowers and plants
"Flower Park Kounan"

Finally, I would like to introduce gardens in the suburbs of Nagoya.

"Flower Park Kounan" is one of the bases of Japan's largest national park "Kiso Sansen Park" along the Kiso River in Konan City, Aichi Prefecture. A park where you can enjoy flowers and seasonal plants. Admission is free. You can enjoy about 1,000 kinds of flowers in the park. Events and workshops are also held every season, making it a perfect spot for a family outing.

The park is centered on a lawn square of approximately 25,000 square meters, and you can go around the park.

Tulips and muscari in spring, coleus and salvia in summer and autumn, and pansies and violas in winter. No matter when you visit year-round, you can enjoy seasonal flowers.

Flower Park Kounan

In the garden, there is also a "garden of fragrance" where you can enjoy the scent of flowers, leaves, and fruits, mainly Japanese and Western herbs and fruit trees.

Flower Park Kounan

There are colorful water lilies in and around the Sora no Niwa (Reflection Pond) at the far end of the facility. The locals call it "Monet's Pond in Konan?" and it's loved by them. The exhibition period is from mid-July to around September.

You can have a leisurely picnic on the lawn. You can also rent a bicycle and cycle. This is a must-visit spot on a sunny day.
