Aichi Prefecture has three remote islands: Himaka-jima Shino-jima, and Saku-shima. The islands are filled with various attractions such as nature, gourmet foods, and art.

All of the remote islands are within a day trip from Nagoya, but the charm of island trips is that you can experience something extraordinary just by crossing the ocean!

Octopus Island "Himaka-jima"

Himaka-jima is a remote island that can be reached in about an hour from Nagoya.

The circumference of the island is about 5.5km. It is a small remote island that can be circumnavigated in about two hours on foot. The octopus and puffer fish are the local specialties, and it is popularly known as the “Octopus  (tako= happiness) Island, Puffer Fish (fugu = fortune)  Island”. With its delicious seafood and the soothing view, you can enjoy island time to your heart's content, forgetting everyday life.

In fact, Himaka-jima is not only famous for octopus, but also conger eel. It is in season from the rainy season to summer.

"Heidi's swing" is popular as a photo spot. When you start rowing towards the sea in front of you, you will feel as if you are melting into the sea and the sky. It is also known as the "lover's swing," and it is said that couples riding together will be happy.

Himaka-jima is also an island with a long history, with ruins from the Jomon and Yayoi periods and ancient tombs from around the 6th and 7th centuries. There are also plenty of historical spots such as "Anrakuji Temple (Tako Amida)", which is known as a power spot on Himaka-jima.

Onbedai and Puffer Fish Island "Shino-jima"

Shino-jima is a remote island that can be reached in about an hour from Nagoya.

The circumference of the island is about 8.2km. It is a small remote island that can be circumnavigated in about two hours on foot. The island is famous for Onbedai (sea bream) and puffer fish, and has a deep connection with Ise Jingu. You can enjoy island time while stepping away from the busy life.

Shino-jima is enshrined with Jizo statues called "Kobo-sama" that surround the island. Including the precincts of each temple, there are 88 Kobo-samas. I can't wait to see how many Kobo-sama I can meet!

When it comes to gourmet food on Shino-jima, the first thing that comes to mind is whitebait, which boasts the largest catch in Japan. The best time to eat them is from April to December.

Shinmei Shrine, located in the center of Shino-jima, is rebuilt every 20 years using materials from Ise Jingu. It is a shrine that has been deeply connected to Ise Jingu for over 1000 years, such as dedicating "Onbedai (salted sea bream)" every year.

From the Kahi Park Observatory, you can enjoy the Matsushima Sunset, which was selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Sunsets!

Island of Healing & Art "Saku-shima"

Saku-shima is a remote island in Aichi that can be reached on a day trip from Nagoya.

Saku-shima is located almost in the middle of Mikawa Bay. The entire area is included in the Mikawawan Quasi-National Park, and the circumference of the island is about 11.5km. It is a small remote island that can be explored on foot in about half a day. There are 22 permanent exhibitions of art works on the island, and it is also known as an "art island" that you can easily visit.

Recently, it became a stage for the movie "Cat and Grandpa" and attracted a lot of attention.

If you visit Saku-shima, we recommend visiting the "Saku-shima Art Picnic"!

The recommended Saku-shima gourmet dish is the famous large clam rice bowl.

I thought it might be a flavorless because of the size, but it was very delicate with a plump texture. The egg and rice soaked in the broth are irresistible. It is simple, but has a unique taste. If you visit Sakushima, this is a must-try gourmet dish!
