深夜深い時間まで話に夢中になって、NETFLIXを見ながら寝落ちしてしまった私達だけど、私は心に決めていた“朝は絶対にホットタブに入る！”と。そう。ここにはホットタブもあるのだ。朝５：３０に自然と目が冷めた私は、爆笑せずにはいられない友達の寝相を横目に、一人外へと向かった。まだ、朝の深い霧が覆った静かなお庭は、真夏なのに空気が凛として、少し肌寒かった。
シャワーしかないアメリカでの生活を１年半ほど過ごしている私にとって、お湯に浸かるのは久しぶり。「あ〜染みる」と声に出さずにはいられなかった私は、改めて日本人だなと気付かされた。

Although, we stayed up past midnight talking, and fell asleep watching Netflix, I made a point to use the hot tub in the morning (Yes, they have a jacuzzi on the property!) When I woke up naturally at 5:30 a.m, my friend was stretched out like a comfy sleeping giraffe and I couldn’t stop myself from laughing.

While everyone else was still asleep I made my way outside, where a gentle mist enveloped the land and I breathed in the cool morning air.

After a year and a half of only taking showers, it felt wonderful as I quietly slipped into the steaming water of the large, modern spa. “Ahh, Shimiru,” I said over and over, “it feels good.” This is what I know, this familiar feeling. I am reminded, I am Japanese.

この旅のビッグイベントであるセーリングが行えるキングストンまでファーマーズマーケットに立ち寄りながら、ダンの車に揺られること３０分。

セーリングに乗り込むと「今日のキャプテンのダンです」とキュッとキャップを被り、再度自己紹介してくれた。１１歳からセーリングを始めたという彼は、２００４年からプロの船長としてハドソン セーリングを運営している。夏の間はセーリングを主に行い、ワインづくりや宿舎をも営む。超多忙な彼に私は「すっごく忙しいと思うんですけど、寝れてるんですか？」と問いかけてみた。「はは。そうなんだよね。たまに頭が可笑しくなりそうなんだよ。さくらも本業はマーケティングの仕事をしていて忙しいんだ。でもね、ワインの事業を大きくする予定で、今アートスタジオとして使っている場所をワイナリーにするんだ」と話す彼の目はキラキラしていた。

The big adventure of the trip – Sailing on the Hudson River!

Later that day, after a 30 min drive from their home, including a stop at the local farm market for breakfast pastries, we arrived at the river port in Kingston to begin our journey aboard Cirrus, a sleek sailing trimaran.

We walked around town for a little while while Dan and his first mate Ian prepared the boat for us. When we arrived at the dock he was waiting with a smile and a cap on his head and said “Hi, I’m Captain Dan.” Dan began sailing at the age of 11 and has been a professional captain since 2004. In the warmer months (along with farming and making wine) he runs his business, Hudson Sailing, taking groups like ours on trips up and down the Hudson river.

“You must be super busy, do you have time to sleep?” I asked. With a sparkle in his eye he laughed and said “Yeah, it can drive me crazy at times.”

見るもの、聞くもの、触るもの、すべての五感から一度に情報が入ってくるCityでは、おいしいものも、美しいものの価値が下がってしまうような気がする。美しい景色を眺めながら頂く特性のブルーベリーモヒートと、今朝、農園から採ってきたというシシトウ炒めは格別に美味しかった。

Vision, sound, touch – your every sense is constantly overstimulated in the city and it’s sometimes hard to appreciate the true value of what you’re tasting or feeling. Here, as I watched the endless blue sky blending into the Hudson River, we tasted rich flavors of grilled shishito and the signature blueberry mojito which are made with freshly picked ingredients from their garden.

「ちょっと待って！僕の知り合いなんだ」といって旋回したボード。どうやら、船のどこかを故障してしまったようで、ダンから何かを受け取るカップル。

いつかは船の免許が欲しいと軽々しくいう私に彼は、「維持するのが大変なんだよ。その覚悟はできてる？」“いや出来てません。すみません。直ぐに影響されるもので……”と放った言葉に後悔する私だった。

セーリングが終わり、宿泊先へ帰る車の中で、ダンは「そうだ。昨日は眠れた？たまに外が静かすぎて寝れないっていう人がいるんだよ」“あ……私寝れなかったです”「やっぱりね。ワインつくりよりも、騒音を録音したCDをつくった方がいいかもね」とジョークをいう彼。

毎日、騒音の中で眠る私は、いつしか音がないと眠れなくなってしまっていた。眠り歌がラップバトルになってしまうとは、想像したことがなかった。これで少しはニューヨーカーに近づけただろうか。

“Oh, wait! I think they need help!” Looks like there is some kind of trouble on their boat, and Dan began exchanging tools with the other sailors.

I lightheartedly mentioned “I’d like a captain’s license one day”. Dan responded “You know, it’s a lot of work to manage. Are you sure you’re committed?”
“Nope. I am not…I’m just easily influenced.” I soon rethought what I just blurted out loud,lol.

On the way back fromsailing, Dan asked, “Were you girls able to sleep well last night? Sometimes the guests have a hard time sleeping because it’s too quiet.” I told him I couldn’t sleep. “I thought so, maybe I should make recordings of city noise so our guests can sleep better” he joked.

How funny, I’ve become so comfortable sleeping with city noise everyday, I was no longer able to fall asleep without it. Never have I imagined a rap battle would become my bedtime lullaby…must be a sign I’m almost a true New Yorker.
