[Saku-shima, Aichi] Recommended Day Trip Plan
Table of Contents
The art tour is finally at its final stage
Bicycle to Shimakita area
If you are on foot, there is also a route that continues to the north side, but since the road continues unpaved, it is recommended that you follow the road around the island if you are biking!
Return to West Port and proceed clockwise around the coast.
Compared to the south side, the wind is a little stronger, and the roads are a little rattling due to the sea breeze. Just a little more to conquer all! I'm fired up!
After about 1.5km, I arrived at TAB's work "Northern Ribbon". Located where the hiking road and coastal course meet, this observatory looks like a sculpture that lightly connects the forest, sea and sky like a ribbon.
You can see the sea from the top. On clear days in winter, you can even see Mt. Fuji!
Ride your bike again to the northeast of the island.
When I went on the outer road, the road was a dead end.
There is Yukari Araki 's work "A place to think of stars". Made from materials collected on the beach.
The jewel-like colorful design reflects the sunlight and is very beautiful.
There was something ephemeral about the appearance of a work made of things that once drifted in the sea, looking out at the sea. It's a little hard to visit, but it's a work of art that you should stop by.

Finally, there is only one stamp left! Follow the mountain road and aim for "Hidamari-an". (We recommend walking on the mountain path.)
After about 10 minutes on the mountain road, I arrived at Toru Matsuoka's work "Hidamari-an". The entire park in the forest is a work of art. Renovation and art work are currently ongoing, and you can enjoy the way the park changes little by little.
The pavilion is also the cover of the "Saku-shima Art Picnic 2020" booklet.
Wow! There is also an alter ego of "Kaijin-sama" here.
Now it's time for the final stamp. (Climax feeling like a documentary)
The stamp rally is finally complete! I conquered all 22 permanent exhibitions on the island. (great sense of accomplishment)
We have a little time until the high-speed boat, so we decided to take a break at the cafe at the end.
Old private house cafe "Monpemaruke"
I came to the cafe "Monpe Maruke" that I saw while visiting art. It is right next to "Yamatoya Kannon" that I visited in the morning.
The interior of the shop, which was renovated by the owner himself, has a warm retro atmosphere. The signboard cat "Kurosuke" welcomed us.
I tried the "dorayaki set". A set where you can make your own dorayaki by sandwiching your favorite ingredients such as bean paste and jam in the dorayaki skin baked on a copper plate. It's fun just thinking about how to eat.
"Homemade squash (island yuzu lemon)" is also included. Squash made with seasonal island ingredients. The bitterness of the yuzu citrus soaks into your tired body.
There were also lunch menus and cakes. It was a soothing old folk house cafe packed with relaxing island time.

After returning the bicycle, the trip to Saku-shima Island ends here. If you want to feel the pleasant sea breeze, go to Isshiki Port. The slowly flowing island time relaxed my mind and body.
Don't forget to check out the off-island artworks too!
Don't forget to check out the off-island artworks too!
There are two works of art in the "Saku-shima Navi Station" adjacent to "Isshiki Sakana Hiroba". This is truly an end to the art trip.
Visit the Art Island "Saku-shima"
An “art picnic” where you can search for art under the blue sky with a rough map in hand is a way to enjoy art that you cannot experience at an art museum. This time, we sent you the theme of conquering all the stamp rally, but it is also recommended to divide it into several challenges while enjoying the relaxing time on the island.
In addition to the art picnic, Saku-shima hosts a total of three island tours: "Saku-shima Kobo Tour" and Yukari Araki's "Daytime Star Tour".
Saku-shima, an island of healing and art, can be reached on a day trip from Nagoya. Why don't you take a relaxing island trip this weekend?
